How would an alcohol-related suspension affect my acceptance into Carleton?

I realize that I'll probably have to write an explanation saying how the suspension...
- happened within the first two months of my freshman year
and
- I have no other disciplinary record

I've gotten good grades and good SAT/ACT scores, so if I apply ED what do you think will happen??

Carleton is more alcohol friendly than other schools so it probably won’t be as bad as it will elsewhere. I don’t think it would affect you much if you have no other disciplinary record.

It might be a good idea to have your guidance counselor explain the suspension in her rec letter.

^^Agreed. I would definitely have your GC write an explanation, because although Carleton’s alcohol policies may be a bit looser than other colleges, it’s still not exactly a great thing to have. Also, on the Carleton Supplement to the Common App, as well as on the COmmon App itself, (at least on this year’s), there is a place where it asks you if there’s anything else you’d like to say, or if there’s a document you want to attach. Perhaps you could use this to explain your predicament.

just wondering; would a middle school related discpline act affect college chances

^Short of a felony for which you are still serving prison time, I seriously doubt it.

^^ From the Common App:

So no, unless you got arrested or something serious like that in middle school, it won’t matter at all.

Thanks so much for your help! If I do write an explanatory letter, do you think that by putting a positive spin on the situation (for example, if I said that I learned so much from the experience and am now a better person because of it), it would improve the chances of the admissions office overlooking my suspension?

I think that’s a good idea. If you can honestly explain that you’re sorry and you’ve changed, it’s probably the best way to go. Good luck!
