Himalayan Fusion is fantastic.

For big portions of simple dishes on the Downtown Mall, try Eppie’s.

Thanks for the recommendations for Mexican, Asian, and other restaurants. I have a trip planned to CVille in a couple of weeks, and I’m looking forward to treating D and her friends to dinner. We’ll definitely consider the suggestions. There’s some tapas place that’s supposed to be pretty good; I think we’re going to try it as well one of the nights I’m there. Himilayan Fusion will be a definite must!

BTW…I’m embarrassed to admit the first time I visited, I was one of those who for a brief instant thought the V’s on the street were directional symbols. For a moment, I panicked thinking I was going the wrong way! :eek:

Tapas = Mas

http://www.mastapas.com/

Get there early or you will be waiting quite a while and might have trouble with parking (there are a couple nice places in that little corner of Belmont). Have good directions. Non-locals sometimes get a little lost over there.

Get the bacon wrapped dates. Even people that don’t like meat love them. I don’t know what Tomas (UVA SARC, by the way) does that’s so special, but no one can replicate them.

I’m not going to lie - I’ve never been a fan of bacon wrapped dates. I mean bacon, I could eat all day long, but the dates just don’t go well with bacon in my opinion. It’s a mix of the salty, crisp bacon with a sweet, oddly textured fruit. However, if you’ve never had wrapped dates, I strongly recommend trying them. You’ll never know you don’t like it until you try it. Though these are in completely different categories;

Bacon wrapped filet > Bacon wrapped dates any day of the week - (meat lover)

While we’re on the topic of food :), does anyone know if there is any sort of food critic club at UVA? Or at least a food explorers club?

jc40:

Taste of China - it has extensive selection of traditional dishes (you will find dishes not the usual American Chinese restaurant). It’s pass the Fashion Mall going north from UVA.
There is also a Chinese dumpling place downtown (do not know the name)

Thai 99 on JPA, a couple of blocks from Stadium Rd

Tokyo Rose, off Ivy Rd

Not Asian: Copacabana Brazilian in Shoppers World Court

There’s a crepe place downtown that’s very small and local, but EXTREMELY good.

@UVAorBust: Fatty. :)

The dumpling place is called Marco & Luca. They have a shop on The Corner now in addition to the shop on the Downtown Mall.

Keep an eye on The Hook and the Cville Weekly for news about Peter Chang’s restaurant, which will be in the north wing of Barracks Road. That place will be the best Chinese in town when it finally gets going.

[C-Ville: This Just In](http://www.c-ville.com/index.php?cat=1991704080566501&act=post&pid=12031512103013087)

Mr.Chang may decide to leave Atlanta after the weather they have been experiencing. At least you can navigate the roads in C’ville over the last several days.

As always, thank you Dean J and to everyone else that has offered ‘where to dine’ recommendations. I have been writing them down for when we are in town.

To UVaorBust: You are correct bacon wrapped filet on the grill, if done right, is superb. I started making it about 10 years ago and even though I do not eat much read meat this is a good choice.

One other restaurant we have tried is Vivace. Good Italian is hard to find, especially when you are used to NY italian. Any other suggestions for C’ville?

Woosah, it seems like NY is Italian mania. If you ever go to NYC, go to Carmine’s in the theatre district. They serve family style dishes for great prices (chicken marsala - 30$ but feeds 4+ people). The food is SUPERB.

[tavola : cozy · rustic · italian : home | 826 Hinton Avenue, Charlottesville, VA, 22902 | (434) 972-9463](http://www.tavolavino.com/)

Being from NYC and Boston, I haven’t been too impressed by Vivace. Tavola might be another option to consider. Dare I saw, Italian is the one hole in the Cville restaurant portfolio.

I’ve had enough Italian food to sink 10 ships. It is fantastic that Charlottesville has a wide array of types of restaurants. Having a lot of choices is great.

UVaorBust I am from NY, currently live in VA. Carmines is okay, however too touristy, wait is too long, would rather go to Little Italy for Italian or other out of the way places that are more in the ‘residential’ sections. I appreciate the recommend though.

I guess woosah, still my fav though ;). If you end up going there ever again, you HAVE to try the bread pudding. It is decedent. I go to school near Arthur Ave so I’ve made numerous trips there. Emilia’s is my favorite restaurant on the street because of the amazing gnocchi.

This is really good info! It’s been nearly 3 years since I’ve been to C’Ville, but I want to head down and visit sometime during my upcoming semester. I am dying to see how South Lawn turned out (in person)…I spent too much time dodging construction over the years along JPA to not see the finished product.

S said that in fall semester, a vehicle ran into the painted bridge and the resulting damage showed perhaps two inches of accumulated paint from the constant painting.

Also, speaking of restaurants, he and I have gone to “Peking Chinese Restaurant” on 4th NE in downtown CV, with fine results each time. No ambiance, but nice people, good food and inexpensive and enough for extra to take home. Either the place is unknown or others disagree, because each time it has been almost completely empty. It’s far better than one that caters to students from right close to grounds on 29.

The paint comes off on its own sometimes:
