helpful opinions on choosing GWU or Fordham!!?

hi i'm a business major at both! so far i have gotten close to the same amount of money at both as well, but unless the final FA ends up being drastically different at one school then money will not be a deciding factor.
I'm really just looking for opinions and such, I know i will prob get more positives about fordham on this thread so im posting it on the gwu one as well.

here are a couple of my thoughts...
I was in looove with fordham until like 4 days ago, haha
I love the rose hill campus!
gw does not have a campus
gw DOES have greek life, i would def rush
both have decent business schools
* i think i was in love with fordham bc i applied early so i've had more time to research the school slash talk to other ppl going to fordham and i clicked with most of them! With that, i pretty much completely forgot about gw until i received my acceptance letter last week- but now i've met awesome ppl that are going to gw as well and already have 3 girls that i would room with! (i already have a roomie at fordham too,and love her)
fordham is in the bronx ( i know it's really not that sketchy at all, but it's still the bronx... i mean idk)
gw is in foggy bottom (aka great location)

Finally, my whole fam is pretty much pushing for me to go to gw bc they think its a much more recognized school than fordham.

help? any comments would be awesomeee

I would make every effort to go the accepted student days at both schools. Pay attention to the students, the curriculum (Fordham does have a large liberal arts core), the campus, and anything else that is important to you (Greek life?). They are both great schools. My S is very happy in Fordham’s business school and my cousin’s S is equally happy at GW. Hopefully when you visit both schools, one will feel right.

im visiting both next week starting from thurs-sunday. First going to gw and then fordham. How does your S like the bronx? haha… does he go to nyc often?

Have you visited? I’ve visited both, and didn’t even apply to GW after my visit.

Also, unless you live in DC, I don’t think this is true.

lizzie44 - It’s great that you are able to go back to visit both of the schools. To answer your question, my S really likes Fordham’s location. He enjoys the combination of easy access to NYC and coming “home” to a traditional campus. I don’t know for sure, but I’d say he goes into Manhattan a few times a month for one thing or another (movies, concerts, shows, museums, San Genaro Festival, a taping of the Daily Show…). He also goes to Arthur Avenue a good amount and has been to the Bronx Zoo, Botanical Garden, and shopping areas in the Bronx - plus he does community service work with an organization near campus. All in all, the location really works for him. But picking a college is a personal thing and what works for one person may not be right for another. Hopefully the visits will help you to decide. We did not look at GW so I have no basis to compare the schools except, as I said, that my cousin’s son is very happy there. Really, you can’t make a bad choice. Congratulations on your acceptances.

i’m faced with making a similar choice as I have to choose from fordham, villanova, penn state and george washington.

George Washington as a school is ranked slightly higher and is a more modern school than Fordham. Fordham is ranked higher for business though, and is slightly more traditional. So you should choose the school on whether you prefer NYC or DC and if you would like a more modern and urban campus or more traditional with a distinct college campus.

If you’re in business, Fordham is going to be better than GW just based on the strength of the location. NYC is vastly superior to DC in terms of internships & Fordham has a great reputation in the city.

In terms of Greek life, well, we don’t have it, but Fordham is full of students who would take advantage of Greek life if we did. There are still house parties on the off-campus apartments–if you really do want to have a college experience similar to Greek life, I would suggest housing off campus in your sophomore year with a bunch of friends, especially because it means you can avoid the rules of the administration.

Moving off campus, of course, means you’ll be smack dab in the middle of the Bronx. Specifically, you’ll be in the Belmont neighborhood, also known as Little Italy. The Bronx is VERY intimidating when you get to campus, especially if you’re not used to the environment. But it’s reputation is exaggerated. Fordham students are safe as long as they use common sense. Eventually, most students learn to embrace the Bronx, whether it’s through volunteer opportunities, the culinary vibrancy, the shopping on Fordham Road, or the lowered drinking age. (Students joke that the drinking age in the BX is 18, because the police could care less about a bunch of college students drinking at bars when there’s a million other things they need to look out for.) It’s a point of pride on campus to wear an “I <3 BX” shirt–because students really do learn to love the Bronx and get over the initial culture shock.

Funny story; when I visited GW (causing me not to apply), they took us to the business building, and words were written on the marble stairs. Because of how the were written up the stairs, there was only one way to read it. It said, “Who says business is all about money? George Washington University.” Obviously, it was meant to be a slogan and the school name, but it looked like a question and answer. My mother and I had to stifle our laughter.

BillyMc- hahahha im excited i’ll get to see that on friday. Do you think you could tell me what you didn’t like about gw? are you still in college? where do you go? hehe kidding, you don’t have to tell me that, but your dislikes about gw would be great!

sunshowers- your post was really helpful, thanks!
You know, before (earlier on in the year) when i had practically forgotten about gw i told myself the same thing about doing business and being in new york and all the possibilities, etc. I mean DC would be great if you’re looking to go into politics, international affairs or such…
Anyways having said that, i know gw’s school of business is not bad and i especially like the program they have for first year business students (i think its called First Year Development Program), you’re supposed to be paired up with a mentor and they like help you out… i mean idk if they actually do, maybe it’s just a ****ty pointless program they have!

I really don’t think I would move off campus haha, that sounds lame. But I know myself and I feel I would be paranoid all night and day that I’m in the house, I’d rather live inside the gates and feel a little more safe…
About Greek life, I mainly like it because of all the instant connections you make- most girls at gw get their internships through their sororities! of course most internships in dc have to do politics or government (stuff). But i know a couple of girls at gw that have had internships at marketing firms and pr firms as well, i guess it’s just harder!
which sucks because that’s what I would want, and I know that is way easier to find in nyc…right?

Honestly guys, I feel I’m leaning towards gw. I think I like the fact that you are more like located IN the city, there is a lot of stuff to do on the weekends, greek life… ha that’s it.
On the other hand here are my current thoughts on fordham, there is a ramvan that facilitates going to manhattan but what i worry about is coming back to the bronx late at night, i know nyc has obviously never ending things to do on the weekends as well- but reallly my friends that go to fordham, that went there bc of its proximity to the city, have told me that they really don’t go often at all. They said they mainly stay in the bronx, and go to the 3 bars or house/apartment parties. Besides that, not having greek life is not really an important, or deciding factor.

What do you guys think? My dad and I talked and we’ve pretty much agreed on that whoever gives me more money will be where I end up; Now if they give me the same amount I will have to choose… and they’ve practically given me the same amount so far. ahhh!

I’m still a high school senior. Fordham is one of my options.

At GW, I got the feeling that the people weren’t very nice or at least didn’t associate much with other students. I disliked the fact that when I got off the metro stop, I was unaware that I was technically “on campus.” There is no way to differentiate a regular city block and a city block that’s a part of the GW campus, except for the occasional blue flag on a street corner.

Some people really like it. No school is for everyone, it just wasn’t for me.

lizzie44 - Nobody but you and your parents can make this decision. You have two excellent choices. If you value Greek life and being in the heart of a city, then GW may be a better choice. If you want a more traditional campus, a strong liberal arts education and easy access to NYC, then it is Fordham. My S wanted a campus feel (he didn’t like NYU so we didn’t visit GW) and was happy not to have frats at college so Fordham ended up being the right place for him. That said, every person has different ideas about what they are looking for and should go where they feel they can be happiest and most successful. Good luck.
