helping a URM/First Gen kid with figuring out college . . .

well, just in case anyone is interested, our friend -was accepted into notre dame.

He’s pretty excited; costs are a big deterrent for him and his mom though. but we are immensely proud of him overcoming so many cultural obstacles and doing so well. it’s like the American Dream in action!

Congratulations!it sounds like this is richly deserved.
Did they fill out FAFSA/CSS right? Can you help check? With Notre Dame meeting full need and their efc being low finances should not be a problem. There may have been a miscalculation though. And it’s always possible to ask Notre Dame for professional judgment based on information not provided, or explaining the student may not be able to come because he can’t afford Transportation, can they review the financial aid package. He has to hurry though (request by end of week so they can make a decision and new offer by April 30).

Did he look at Questbridge? Not necessarily targeting Catholic schools but great support all the way atound.

@bgbg4us Thank you for the great news and update! Bless your parents and your family for opening your hearts to them. Truly, their story is the American Dream!
As for college costs, ND is full need met, so if their EFC is low then ND will fill in the rest (I know from firsthand experience). If there’s still a gap financially, they should contact ND ASAP to see if their forms are correct, or if there is additional information that might change the FA offer. I’d first try the Financial Aid office, then maybe his designated regional admissions counselor if that doesn’t work. https://admissions.nd.edu/connect/find-your-counselor/
Do this ASAP as April 30 is right around the corner. Best wishes!

^^^ he’s attending notre dame!

8 years ago, several of my PTA friends “adopted” this mom and kid at christmas as they were needing support. I just sent out an email to that group with this good news! it’s making me smile.

@bgbg4us Congratulations to him! <:-P It sounds like ND pulled through with the FA package! Yaaahhooo!! He and his mother are blessed to have your family and community! Such a great story!!

Do you know what happened wrt financial aid (ie., #20 costs were a deterrent/#24 he’s attending)

@MYOS1634 - yeah; i’m sort of curious and will chat with them at his grad party in a few weeks. The mom has worked her tail off over the last 15 yrs; but the culture of how she was raised in regards to money is so different than that what we’ve grown up with in US. SO GENEROUS; but never one to save.

Thanks and congratulations to him!!!
