Helping top students from low-income families enter top colleges

See C.W. Nevius' column in today's San Francisco Chronicle (sfgate.com) for a description of a nonprofit college counseling organization in Oakland that provides horizon-raising and college counseling assistance to help BWRKs from low-income families through the admissions process so that these kids can become admitted to top schools, with scholarships.

another program is called Questbridge.

Also the Princeton Prep Program, Mercer County NJ (Princeton,Trenton, Ewing, areas).

I have been trying to help my former (middle school) students prepare for college applications, I go to college fairs and bring back posters for my walls in my classrooms, videos and discs for them to borrow to view at home. Does anyone know if these programs have websites or if you have had any experience with them, were they successful?

Mr. B, I know that the Princeton program is for three summers at Princeton, and is supplemented during the school years with tutoring. The summer courses are academic ones such as math and writing, but also arts enrichment and college preparation (your area of interest).

As for success, last year's graduating students went to colleges such as Columbia, Vassar, Rutgers Tulane, U of Richmond, Bryn Mawr, and Princeton.

The program was founded by John Webb, the director of Princeton's Program in Teacher Preparation, and Miguel Centano, Professor of Sociology. Their contact info. can be found on the Princeton U. site if you do a people search.

How wonderful and caring of you to help your students!

Here is an article that describes (among other things) Harvard's stepped up efforts to recruit low income and minority students.
