Helpppp. Math summer class

Hi guys, I need your input on this situation that I have. I'm going to be a junior in hs in the fall and would like to take an Algebra II summer course at my local CC. I'm doing this because I want to get ahead and be in Precalc my junior yr, and AP Calc my senior yr. When I went to my local CC to apply, they told me that I would have to take a placement test and score in English 101 and Math 118 (intermediate algebra) or above. I don't understand why I have to take the English section when I'm only going for one summer for this one particular course. And, the placement exam includes materials from Alg II in which I have no knowledge in. I'm going back to my CC monday, but until then, what do you guys think?

There’s no HS Summer school in which you can take Alg 2? Really the only things Alg 2 introduces is exponents, logarithms, and rational expressions. Easily self-taught.

This probably doesn’t apply to you yet, but if you’ve taken the ACT already, ask if you can submit that instead.

Until then, if you know what topics are on it that you don’t already know, study.

If it becomes a problem where they won’t let you take it, do you actually need the credit? If not, go sit in the class, do the homework, take the tests, pretend like you’re in the class without actually being enrolled. You’ll learn the material you’ll need to learn.

MIT, a lot of high schools don’t have summer school at all. Mine didn’t.

^ Oh yeah, I forgot. A lot of CC’s for dual enrollment allow SAT or ACT scores to be submitted.

That’s weird that they require English.

In my experience, Algebra 2 is the shortest and simplest level of math. It’s probably the easiest to take during the summer. Like MIThopeful16 pointed out, it’s just exponents, logarithms, and rational functions. I’d even recommend just teaching it to yourself from a textbook during the summer (that’s basically what I did between my freshman and sophomore years), but it depends on how courses work at your high school and CC. If you’re planning on taking precalculus at the CC in your junior year, and if they just give you a placement exam, then teaching yourself Algebra II over the summer is probably the most straightforward way to prepare.

Do you HAVE to take a class and then take the placement test to get credit? or just the placement test? I think they require you to have English because of the textbook.
And like Halogen said, you can self study this; it’s not hard. I know a kid who took a class, and he just ended up self studying the rest because the class sucked. You can self study by getting a textbook and going on youtube (khanacademy).

In my CC, we don’t have to take English =/.

For taking the class without credit, my CC didn’t let me =/.

Algebra 2 is actually very important, if you’re going to self-study, make sure you do it well.

I cannot submit my SAT and ACT scores because I have not taken them. I need to attend a class in the summer because my HS wants to see the credit. I’m only doing this because I really want to take Pre calc in my junior yr (fall) and my school will not allow me to take it unless I attend this summer course. My problem is, I know I can do well in the class BUT its this placement test my CC is telling me I have to take that worries me. I don’t remember much of what I learned in Alg 1 and feel like I’m gonna fail the placement test. (I have to score in Eng 101 and Math 118 in order to get into this summer course) I don’t know why I even have to take a placement test for 1 summer course. Its not like I’m planning to attend CC for the rest of my HS career. Sighhhhhh I’m just so confused
