What are somethings i can take part in other than clubs to boost my extra curricular's. is there something colleges like in particular?? I need all the help i can get. I am willing to do anything. And the reason I haven't is because i haven't had much opportunity. What are somethings that the average kid doesnt do but is what colleges like.

Well what do you like? Writing? In that case, try the school newspaper. If you're into math try the math team or some other type of math-based science club that takes part in competitions (my school has a physics team and a chemistry team). If nothing appeals, then start your own!

it's people like you that top colleges are trying to avoid. Find your own hobby for god's sake!

start your own club, that not only shows leadership but you also get to pick what you want to do..

Clubs are a great way to get involved, but not the only way. My kid is involved in only a few school related things but has many ec's that are probably atypical. She's a competitive skater, which does take up alot of extra time, but has also always pitched in to help wherever she sees the need. Among other things, she's helped to restore a national historic register home, cared for a terminially ill neighbor, organized a small group of kids who help the seniors in our neighborhood with yard work, worked for a handful of youth organizations who always need workers at games and events, and spends time volunteering for a church with a community outreach program even though we're not of that denomination.

She didn't do any of these things through clubs or with her college apps in mind but, as it turns out, one of them did have an influence on her choice of major and she'll discuss it in her essay. The point is, there are always opportunities to get involved with your neighborhood and community if you look! Try to get the ball rolling just by helping someone without looking for anything in return - a student struggling with a subject you're good at, a reading program for elementary kids, a community project that could use an extra pair of hands. It's never too late to get involved!
