Hendrick House OR Illini Tower

Hello,

I am coming to UIUC as a new freshman engineer, and would like to know what to choose between these 2 private certified housing buildings.

The social scene is quite important for me, as well as others aspects (such as quality, staff, location, food...)

I heard that Hendrick was known to be quiet, so is there still a possibility to make new friends at other dorms and hang out there ? The other choice I have is Illini Tower, but don't have much info about it...

I would like to enjoy the freshman experience...

Thank you for your help.

Hi,I’m an incoming freshman for Engineering too,and I will live in Hendrick House. I think the school is so big and known as a good party school. So I dont think you need to worry too much about the difference dorms can make for your social life. No matter you’re greek or not, you’ll find tons of activities out there. So the reason why I chose Hendrick is that when it’s time for study, I don’t wanna be disturbed. And I heard the East building of Hendrick has quite many rooms per floor, which facilitates you to get to know more people. While, if partying 24/7 is your thing,I think neither of two is a good choice, for the private houses are generally quieter than University Halls.

Well, I hate to be a buzz kill Alan, but IT definitely trumps Hendrick in social life. It is one of the most expensive apartments if you can afford it and there are a lot of snobs, but it is close to the frat houses, the gender balance is more even, and you’ll tend to meet more people than just engineers. Those factors are pluses or minuses depending on how you look at it. Hendrick like you said does have a more quiet, studious environment.

You can definitely meet people in your classes and outside activities, but I met most of my friends in my dorm. Some people I knew only returned to their dorm/private housing for sleeping, but that’s another social and academic choice to make. One benefit of dorm living is that you can eat at any dorm (many engineers head to ISR for lunch for example), and you can meet people that way, whereas you’ll have to go back to Hendrick or IT for your meals.

Kevercho, What?Did I understand you correctly? We have to eat in our private house???For a whole year??

ya u didnt know that? if u live in a university residence hall u can eat in any of there dorms but if u choose private u eat in that building only cause ur contract is with them and not the university

I don’t know about Hendrick House, but Illini tower has amazing dorm food (especially compared to somewhere like ISR)

No matter how wonderful the food is,eating in the same house will kill me!!I’m kinda regret the decision before…

Alanthestrong…I don’t get what you were thinking…did you think you were living in private housing but could still eat in the University dorms? Someone did not explain it to you very well…but it is kind of common sense that the two are seperate isn’t it?

yeah man, I know how stupid I was… Look, I think as a student, we can eat in any dinning hall in the school, cuz you belong to the school and those dorms belong to the school too…
Anyway thanks you guys for telling me this.

actually the residence halls belong to the school but the private dorms are owned by companies… for example HH was founded by the Hendrick family is a private company that has a contract with the school

I believe that you can still buy a limited meal plan/points to eat on campus even if you do not live in a university dormitory.
