I will start orientation at Hendrix Aug. 16th. I am so excited about attending! Plus the money they gave me last minute is awesome. I just wanted to keep the people who frequent the boards updated on my experience. There arent any students at Hendrix on CC but after my first few weeks I will write a full review, good and bad, on the college so the parents can get a better idea of what it is like there (Plus I am from NJ going to AR so I will let you know how well I adjust to the south). I notice a lot of parents mention that their D or S may look at Hendrix as a safety, stat wise or money wise. Either way, I will let everyone know what I think soon. Check back here in late Aug.! BTW if you have any questions now, even though I havent started class yet, I will be more then happy to answer it for you, or find out the answers for you when I fly out there!

Good luck, 1212! Thanks for the update and I hope you have a wonderful year.

Valuable, Good luck indeed! I, for one, will be anxiously awaiting word from you so don't forget us!

Please do keep us posted. Hendrix is a school in which my DD has expressed some interest. Good luck! I look forward to reading your posts!

There was someone on here in the spring that I believe was going to attend Hendrix. You might do a search. Good luck.

Edit: I did a search and realized that person was you!

Yep. The CC Hendrix fan club steered Valuable right to Hendrix but Valuable picked up the reins and rode that horse on across the river. I remain very proud of you for thinking outside of the box.

Hendrix is a wonderful quirky little school that will impress and amaze anybody who visits. Beautiful safe campus and pecan shells to boot. Thanks for posting and I'm glad you remembered us. For those who don't remember the story, valuable was caught without a chair when the music stopped and she took the iniative to call, write, and otherwise descend upon Hendrix . She got in and instead of punishing her for lateness they awarded her a tidy sum of merit money. Impressively fair-minded and generous folk.

I'm convinced you made the right choice and again for those who don't know, Hendrix starts out as the best private bargain in top 100 LAC's (IMO with Centre, Hanover and Wells) with tuition in the mid teens and generous merit aid. That and the fact that 50% of the kids are from OOS and they have Volvos with canoe racks should give you an idea that we're talking a pretty rare bird. I really like this school and they have a spectacular admission rate to med schools, too. Your kids can do a lot worse than Hendrix and they can't do much better.

i woke up 5 in the morning on the 16th, drove to baltimore and took a flight into little rock! i was picked up by an admissions officer (jack frost) who drove me back to the campus. on the way we picked up the one international student a year who receives a full tuition scholarship. he was from burma so we had quite an interesting chat on the way to conway...the campus is absolutely gorgeous! i cant emphasize enough how nice the fountains, brick buildings, flowers, etc. are. i spent my first day with orientation leaders since freshmans didnt move in until the 17th. we all made fun of our southern/northern differences and played mad gab. its a game where you read phrases off a card really fast and then try to guess what the saying is "example a card would read "sand toffee" where the real answer is santa fe haha well since i was the jersey girl they got a real kick out of MY! accent...ill never use yall i swear to you! ive heard it all day..along with the phrase :ill be fixing to go out: which means im getting ready. but anyways we got to eat really good burgers from back yard burgers ( a small shop in little rock that delivered the food) and of course there were veggie burgers for the vegetarians...i met so many nice people it must be a southern thing because ive never met that many kind people in jersey lol...after i chatted and chilled out i was given a tour of the dorms and even got to meet my RAs. there is a wide variety of people..my RA is a lesbian but probably the sweetest girl youll ever meet...there are people of every background...people from florida..oregon...mass. etc. but let me try to stay on topic. my dorm has its own sink, dresser, closet, desk, etc. and you can even bunk the beds if you want. my roommate is from baton rouge but because she is a sophmore (we requested each other after becoming friends online) she wont be here until the 21st...i also got to meet the "martin men" which even tho there are not sororities/frats...the dorms pretty much like frats and sororities..martin "men" are the party boys on campus where the veasey girls are the party girls..im in veasey by the way lol..galloway has the nicest dorms but also for the quiet studious type...raney is pretty quiet too..couch or "couchies" are the coed dorm who seem to pull in an alternative type student who parties but also likes to read and intellectualize...the big thing here is called shirttails (i have a dorm meeting in about 30 mins!) where all the dorms design their own dance and pretty much face off against the other dorms in a big competition...its a little risque (sexy outfits and the infamous veasey dance move :"THE CRAWL!" haha ill let you know when i perfect that ....but back to what i did...so i chilled in the martin dorm and stayed the night at a hotel...i was picked up today...i moved in all my stuff which was quite crazy...everyone was really helpful even tho they wanted to kill me since i was the jersey girl with 7 heavy boxes that they needed a dali to lift in order to move it all up to the 3rd floor lol i had a wonderful opening session where we sang the alma matter, listened to some inspiring speeches from the dean, head of admissions, student affairs, etc. then we had our class picture taken on the huge steps which are right outside the chapel...everyone here is actually preppy/emo and less quirky than expected. i also took my spanish placement exam which was quite difficult considering i thought i knew my spanish pretty well..it is obvious that the academics here are something you cant breeze by which is good!...since im here all alone and i have no parents or roommate a lot of southern parents showed me some hospitality and let me dine with their families during dining hour. i met so many wonderful people. tonight i have an icebreaker activity to go to which is kinda like a sketch comedy..it is suppose to be so much fun! then there is a dance later on with food etc. tomorrow i finish up picking classes and then i go waterskiing with my freshman orientation trip at brady mountain for 3 days! when i return there are some more dinners and events but time to buckle down on tuesday with class...explorations/journeys are required classes but they seem great because its like a western thought class that covers everything from aristotle to gandhi....plus you are required here to join clubs and attend events so the every1 is involved...every1 here is very motivated and smart...reminds me a lot like kenyon..of course im in love with hendrix and i really dont picture myself wanted to transfer now! even tho they dont offer russian/arabic ( i am very into languages) they are offering to have a professor here who knows russian to teach me one on one with the language while studying russian history/religion etc. and complete an interdisiplinary study instead on top of spanish and internation relations. they really can help u achieve anything. i want my brother to come here so bad! plus the weather is fabulous! im sure i forgot a lot of things in this post but ill try and keep updating. i am so glad i chose this school..i feel at home..the southerns are so kind..the food is great...the campus is motivated...they are building all new sport facilities and a wellness/athletic center....little rock is like a victorian little town with trollies and the arkansas river near by...i guess i would just like to say..GO HENDRIX!!!!!!!!11

I am so very happy for you! It sounds as if you "fit" very well. But how can the weather be fabulous? Unless sweating is your idea of fun !

BTW, I have a feeling you'll be saying ""ya'll" before Thanksgiving. I don't speak "southern" but I do say "ya'll" and "fixin' to." Ya jus cain't hep yursef.

valuable1212, that is soooo outstanding. Don't try to eat it all up in the first week!LOL. It sounds wonderful and we can hear the joy in your voice. Job well done.

Valuable, I am SO excited for you! And, talk about personal service - Jack Frost himself picking you up. It must have been nice to meet him finally after talking to him so often. Keep us updated!!! YAY!!!

Way to go Valuable!

I predict that your Jersey days are limited - you'll find some nice guy from Texas, and start saying ya'll!

I remember your angst from the spring, and all your misgivings - now the joy and exuberance shining through your words makes all us Moms grin who have just sent or are sending kids away. We want them to have what you are experiencing.

All the best, keep us posted - have your ever skiied before? I know they have beautiful lakes in the Ozarks - have a super year.
