HEOP/EOP, as I have found recently, is a program that gives opportunity to students who are inadmissible under regular admissions of prestigious colleges.
I’m kinda confused about this program because one of my friends got accepted into Cornell and he’s not really financially or academically disadvantaged (His stat is pretty lame comparing to the rest of us who applied. 1300 SAT, 94~95 avg, one or two ap classes in senior year, a couple extracurriculars but nothing too impressive). Apparently a few days after my friend submitted his application, he received an email from Cornell that identified him as an eligible HEOP candidate(he checked “no” in the common app)
A lot of people in my school are from low income families & fit the academic criterias to be HEOP candidates just like him. I’m now getting a little upset because the top students in my school applied regular and they all got waitlisted/rejected by all Ivies. So now my question is, do HEOP students have the same college experience as the regular admission kids? Do they get full ride tuition and free tutors? Special classes? If the student did not pass the special courses that are required to take during the summer, what will happen? Most importantly, why would this program aim for student who is academically and financially disavantaged rather than someone who is high achieving and low income…? That doesn’t really make sense to me… Also, is this fair for students who also have low income but applied regularly? Some of us are regretting that we should have applied for HEOP and idk if this is right LOL
