Heop

Hello, I was wondering if parents here have heard of the HEOP programs in NY. So far I have applied to two of the programs: one at Cornell and one at NYU. Do you think that I would qualify for these programs? My parents total income is around $10,000 for the past year. Also my ACT score is somewhat low (28 (25 reading). I am very curious as to whether I would qualify for this program. I have been through a lot in the past yr (see other post thanks!), and I feel that I would greatly benefit from this program.

Do you think that I might be selected for this criteria? Furthermore, will this help me in the admisisons process if selected. Thank you.

I don't know about the program, but you could do a search on this board using "HEOP program". It brings up a number of threads. A few of the posters in the threads seem knowledgeable. Private Message them with questions, if they don't respond to your current thread. Good luck.

Yes, you should qualify economically, but bear in mind there are some other requirements as well so the economic side is not a guarantee of admission to any specific college or university participating in the program.. The best source of information on how to apply under HEOP is your guidance counselor, so be sure you have talked with him. Also, just at tip: at some schools there are slightly different requirements for applying for financial aid if you're applying as a HEOP applicant, so be sure you check out those differences as well and pay attention to all deadlines for getting your financial aid paperwork in to the individual colleges. Good luck!

Anyhow, here is the link to Cornell's site on the program - the econ. requirements are the same at all schools.

And, if you have adobe acrobat, this explains the program in a very thorough manner:

Carolyn & Orangeblossom:

Thank you so much for your help and effort. My gpa is not perfect ( I have had 1 C and 5 Bs). In fact, it is slightly lower. Furthermore, my act score is low for cornell and my reading score is a 25. I thought this program would be ideal for me to pursue my goals during this most tragic time in my life (see other post)

My guidance counselor said that I may qualify for HEOP at Cornell considering the fact that my grades show my potential to handle an environment like that of Cornell. Im curious if this is true. I have contacted the HEOP and Minority Affairs as well. Other suggestions are greatly welcome.

I think you sound like a solid candidate. Good luck - the HEOP program is a wonderful opportunity, and I wish more states had similar programs.

Carolyn:

Im curious, have you known anybody get into this program and is it competitive? Thank you!

NYU HEOP

Students must meet academic and family income guidelines to be eligible, and must attend an eight-week summer program prior to the start of their freshman year. No special application is required for HEOP consideration, and New York State residents are automatically reviewed for eligibility during our normal application review process.

NYU and a few other NYS schools also have a CSTEP program

Collegiate Science and Technology Entry Program (CSTEP)

CSTEP is a NYU program for New York State residents underrepresented in business, law, science, and health-related programs who do not qualify for the Higher Education Opportunity Program (HEOP). CSTEP students receive the same academic and counseling services that HEOP students receive, and participate in the same eight-week summer program before their freshman year. No special application is required for CSTEP consideration, and New York State residents are automatically reviewed for eligibility during our normal application review process.

CSTEP Services
Students selected for CSTEP join HEOP students in the six-week pre-freshman summer program designed to enhance academic performance.

CSTEP students participate in:

Weekly workshops on pre-professional courses such as math, science, and economics.

Test preparation and Seminars on study skills

In a word, yes getting into HEOP at NYU or Cornell is going to be competitive because sadly NYS is not at a loss for low income students like you who show promise.

Good luck
