well it's too early to tell, but you will definitely need to improve your GPA and class rank... ECs look good though...also-- SATs will be an important factor for you- have you taken the PSAT? good luck.

improve GPA a bit. The more the better, and study for your SATs.

Enjoy the rest of your years in high school.

well, also, i forgot to mention that i should have a REALLY good rec. from a high ranking alumni. also, my gpa is low bc i took high school credit courses in middle school (3.0 average) and its combined with my 3.8883 as a freshman last year, so this year it should def be a 3.6-3.7 to end my sophomore year.

UVA, UVA, UVA. Well, it is good that you are in-state. That is a plus. However, don't count on getting in because your big sis did. My friend did not get into UVA, and he lives in VA, and his sister and brother go to UVA. In addition, his stats are slightly higher than yours. If I were you, I would make my essay extremely well and unique. However, you could get in because you play sports, but I am not sure that UVA recruits tennis players and swimmers. They may. Talk to your coaches to see. The only students at my school who were accepted to UVA were those who play sports.

well, i have heard that my sister being an alumni has nothing to do with anything now since it is so competitive. but, my gpa will be way higher end of jr. year, a projected 3.9 to be exact. i have a pretty good feeling, and even if uva did recruit tennis players and swimmers, im not good enough to get a scholarship for either.

Ii thought alumni relations at uva helped alot?

i don't think the fact that her sister went there will help too much.. if it was a parent, then yes.

I think it does. The principal behind alumni relations is donations. and although recent graduates probably dont donate any money, they probably will in the future. so by rejecting a brother/sister, UVA would be losing donations from those irritated siblings.

any other inspirational suggestions/thoughts?

Maybe. If you have that GPA now, it will definitely drop once you start takning allt hose AP's. You need to talk to your counselor and have them drop the courses you took in middle school from your transcript.

i know for a fact that taking high school credit courses early in middle school looks great to uva. and my school just doesnt go and drop the scores. the ap classes im taking next year are all definitely really slack, except for us history. like it is possible to get as in them. so hopefully itll be a 3.9.

BTW, being a legacy w/ a family member as an alumnus/alumna (alumni is plural) doesn't really help if you're in-state, because a lot of in-state applicants are legacies - so being one is negligible. Most in-staters are treated about the same (depending on what talents you bring to the table.) Being a legacy truly helps if you're an out-of-state applicant, because your application would be placed in the in-state pile.

Southernbelle, definitely continue to take the most difficult classes at your high school and work on improving your grades. A 3.5 isn't bad, and you're in the top 10%, but you should work on improving your GPA. Your EC's are good. Just make sure you show commitment to the organizations/activities that you love and are involved in. UVa loves seeing someone committed to a cause and doing great things. Lastly, your essays will be very important. So be sure they're cohesive and eye-catching, and have them show the ad comms a window into your life. Here's a helpful link for you:

You're doing fine, keep up the hard work, but have some fun. Don't read all these posts and be convinced like everyone hear that you must go to an ivy league school or duke/uva. There are plenty of great schools that don't have ridiculously low acceptance rates that will allow you to get into great graduate schools. Graduate schools are more important for most profressions you plan to pursue, but regardless, try and enjoy yourself sophomore yaer in highschool, don't worry so much. It'll all work out. I've spent my highschool career overworking myself, and I'm feeling that I really wasted time. I'm not saying not to work hard, definately do, but enjoy yourself too.

man, everyone on this freakin board wants to go to uva, personally i think it might be a tad bit overrated... and it's filled with preppy rich kids. giant egos + stuck up = *******s.

uh its not filled with rich kids. alot of ppl go at my school because of the instate tuition and they can't afford ivies. the out of staters might be though.

go to one of the football games and you'll see what i mean...

thats cuz all the geeks and nice guys stay at home :)

i know some friends going to UVA and they're not stuck up at all, very down to earth good friends.

I'm not convinced that I have to go to an Ivy to be successful, I want to go to Arizona.

I definately agree it's an incredible deal if you live instate. In fact, viriginia residents are lucky due to their awesome state schools. If I lived their, it'd top my list.
