Maybe I am confused- you said you “attend a high school program for gifted students at a state university. My curriculum is comprised of entirely college courses…” plus you have 4.0. And more. You def seem a high achiever. No? I didn’t think you were pretentious- I just advised: don’t come across pretentious, which so many kids do.

If you did come across as normal, super. What I meant is so many CC kids either whine about their 2300 or act like they invented the wheel.

I think you did fine. A number of things will stand out and get those nice little marginal notes- starting wth all that calc. They’ll def give a 2nd look at a female neuro applicant and like the TaeKwonDo. Plus all the other things you know they will like. It’s ok. Just know it’s a tough win. :)

Oh okay. I took your warning as like, “stop saying your school is the best.” x) I really appreciate your input.

I’m surprised no one has commented on my 30 in science. Standardized tests have always been my biggest weakness. that and the fact that I don’t really have any leadership positions outside of my school.

It gets to a point in admisisons where they note a weakness or flaw and keep going- that’s where having the big picture right counts. You are ok. Now is when you sit back and be happy you got through the last 3 years- and the last 3 months. Reflect on that. Breathe. k?

(It’s really other hs kids who like to knock the one or two pinholes- ie, kids who have barely gotten their own paperwork out, much less been accepted anywhere.)

Big Fire, I think it’s hard to say that anyone has a “great chance at HPME or PLME”. People have a chance. And that’s about it. Nothing to do with the applicant, the school they come from, or their statistics - it’s just that with a 1-2% acceptance rate, it’s pretty darn tough to have a solid chance.

PotterPie, while I think you have nice EC’s, I don’t know how they convey an interest in medicine from me just looking at them. That’s for you to figure out. But be prepared to speak on your interest in medicine and why it is the field that stands out over all the others. What have your EC’s shown you about medicine that make it so amazing? Food for thought.

Thanks. That’s the main thing I’m worried about besides my science score. I don’t know how much weight my PLME essays will have. If I got accepted just to Brown though, I don’t think I would complain. What do you think my chances are just for Brown, chemwz? If they think I’m a horrible applicant for PLME, will it hurt my chances at Brown?

Yeah, I was talking about the Northwestern HPME acceptance rate. Sorry.

Your PLME essays WILL carry weight. Lots of it. That being said, they should be strong and reflective of your desire to do medicine.

I think your chances are fine for Brown, not necessarily PLME - but like I said, no one’s chances are great. And no, not being a good candidate for PLME will not affect your chances at Brown.

Oh yay. I think my PLME essays are strong. It’s up to them to decide, though.
Doesn’t biological research carry some weight though? I haven’t won anything with it, but depending on my professor’s rec, would it help them choose?

Besides my question about bio research contributing to PLME chances, I want to say that something chemwz said caught my eye–they’ll give a second look to a female neuro applicant?

Are most cognitive neuroscience majors male? where can I find these demographics?

Potterpie: cognitive neuroscience is probably one of the most common PLME concentrations, and PLME is just about 50/50 male/female (I don’t know what the application ratio is, but do remember that med schools’ application ratios are leaning female right now). There aren’t PLME demographics listed mostly because we’re such a tiny group.

I didn’t say anything about females and neuro. That must’ve been someone else.

Also, I am not trying to get people’s hopes down. I do have a good sense of humor too…it’s just hard to convey that on the internet :)

As for chances - bio research does count. But it alone won’t get you in. Nothing along can get someone in. It’s the way someone interweaves their EC’s to create a compelling application. More so, it creates a compelling reason for the answer to “Why do you want to be a doctor?” I simply tell people this: in order for them to know that you will 100% stick with medicine, they have to see a commitment to it. Of course, there are exceptions. I think that you stand as good a chance as anyone. You are about where many applicants are, in my opinion - but that’s all it is, my opinion. I have observed Brown admissions through my father, a regional chair of alumni interviews for the past 14 years. I am applying this year as well, so I know about as much as you or anyone knows.

Thank you so much. :)) I got deferred PLME.
Don’t give up! Here was my plan of action had I been deferred:
Send subject test scores (I took Chem and lit in December to prepare for RD round and I already have math 2)
PASSIONATE letter of intent. I don’t know how they are supposed to go but I would have just written one and asked my counselor for help.
I asked for another science rec from my gen Chem professor for PLME… he hasn’t responded lolol. But I lost my 4.0 this semester so I doubt I’d get PLME anyway.

I know it’s tough. My boyfriend got deferred from his dream school, too, and he’s taking it kind of badly. Don’t give up. The second he’s feeling okay I’m going to do everything I can to help him get MIT to realize that they need him. Give yourself a while up absorb what happened and why-sort through any weaknesses in your app, read it again, and really think about what you can do to sound genuine in your letter. Possibly contact your interviewer for advice.

I wish you and all the other people on CC who have been working so hard but got deferred the absolute best of luck. You can do it!!!

potterpie - Thanx a looooot! Ill do all the stuff u suggested … I probably got deferred coz i had ticked that box that i dont want to go ED to Brown if i dont get into the PLME so maybe thats the case… i have no idea … im probably applying to top schools for RD coz my parents wnt lemme go to the US if i dnt get thru an Ivy or something! and if they’ve accepted u ED for brown they r gna put u into PLME dnt worry! I sure u can work back to a 4.0 … just dnt catch senioritis … Im sorry bout ur boyfriend i hope he gets thru MIT is amazing… my uncle went there
CONGRATS once again! … I hope to be classmates next year! :)
