Im currently a HS junior from Long Island, New york. I go to your average public high school(we get maybe a handful of people going to Ivy league schools each year). I plan on majoring in economics, and would like to stay within a reasonable drive (under 8 or so hours) of New York. I would like a small-mid sized school, but size isn't a huge issue

Here are my stats:
-3.7-ish GPA(UW)
-Almost all honors(one or two dowling college classes, plus the below APs)
-I will graduate with 3 APs(AP Lit, AP gov, AP physics)
-136 Math+ Verbal PSAT(total of 197....writing section blows)
-steady increase in grades each year

ECs:
-DECA(two years)
-people to people student ambassador to Australia (2003)
-Tennis (season hasnt started yet but will be varsity for 1-2 years and JV for the two previous years)
-Band-Alto Sax (2 years at HS level, 1st chair concert band, 5 chair symphonic)
-Marching band (1 year)
-school newspaper (2 years, one as staff writer and one as advertising manager

for some reason it didnt post it...sorry here it is:

• Clemson
• elon-tuition
• university of maryland-college park
• st mary's college of Maryland
• William and Mary
• SUNY binghamton
• SUNY Geneseo

any critiques or additions to my list would be greatly appreciated (also if anyone can recomend a super reach that doesnt require SAT II's tahtd be great)

William and Mary might be a reach for you. You might want to add James Madison U, and the U of Mary Washington. I like your list of schools by the way.

May I ask why you don't want to take SAT IIs? For a school like William and Mary, I would highly recommend it. It is highly competitive, especially for out-of-state applicants, and although it is a slight reach with your stats, you're going to want to have something to set you apart, with your EC list especially.

With a 197 PSAT, you'll also want to take a run at your SAT studying to apply to William and Mary. Get that up as high as you can.

With a 1360 SAT equivalent, you could have a shot at Cornell, Middlebury, Colgate, Hamilton, Colby, Bucknell, Lehigh, Lafayette. I don't Clemson is going to be an 8 hour drive from LI. I would think that you would probably get into SUNY Geneseo.

oh, and i have a house in SC(that my parents will eventually move to), so clemson wouldnt be that bad, but the general rule is to keep it under 8 hours or so.

as a prospective econ major myself, i'll ask you--
do you want to do business econ or policy econ? that makes a BIG difference in evaluating programs...

geneseo is great; i have several friends who are very happy there. MD-CP is also very good...if you want to do policy, i would suggest checking out RIT...i'm a bit biased towards it, i'll admit, but it has one of the best policy programs in the country, and with great co-op placements even for liberal arts majors.
