Here to help new comers with Q&A

Hi All,

I did a similar thread before like a year ago and got many interesting question from you guys. Now I want to devote some time to this again as I know how stressful college admissions/decisions may be. Remember, however, that I cannot estimate your "chances"--the only way to find out is to apply unfortunately!
About myself: personally, I was not an A student, more of a B+ to an A-, nor did I do well on my SATs. However, I am now in my second year of College of Arts and Science, in the Honor Scholars program. So, as you can tell, there are ways of getting in regardless of numbers.
I am an anthropology major, so it might be hard for me to answer questions pertaining to outside fields.

I will try to cover your questions as best as I can. Let me know what I can help you with!

best,
~breath

Hey!! I'm in CAS Class of '11.. and I like you had an A- GPA with relatively low SATs. I am attending the CSTEP program this summer at NYU. Do you know anything about it? Also, what can you tell me about Jornalism & Political Science at NYU? I am planning on double majoring in the two fields. Can you give me any advice on h ow difficult the programs are? Thanks much.

how did you deal with the financial aspect

How do you deal with the pretentiousness of NYU students? Honestly.

ugh please don't tell me the majority of people you've met are pretentious firewalker. :(

Hi,
Yes, I am in HEOP so I definitely know about Cstep. :-)

hmm, i am no expert on journalism and polit sci., but i could say that at the undergraduate level it should not be that difficult. it all depends (I know you'll hate it when someone say "depends"--but...) on what kind of a student you are. first of all, you should have great appreciation for what you do--that's how i get through my anthro classes. journalism and polit sci kids that i know are not complaining much. people who are dead tired are using pre-meds, so don't worry. do you have nyu home email address already? i am asking because you could go on there, click on academics, log into Albert which is our registration site and see what classes you need to take for journalism and politic sci (most definitely you'll take political theory,it's a core class). let me know if you don't know what i'm talking about and i'll get the info for you. basically, from there on: you can easily look up the professor's email and ask him or her for the syllubus with the class information--which will tell you how many essays/readings you have to do. this should put everything in perspective. i know that in political theory, the core class, people fall asleep if they don't like. it's alot of reading and you need to make room for it b/c it might dominate your semester. but then again, if you love polit sci you might as well love the idea of it dominating your semester!
one girl that was in my class, i don't really know her, but she shared with us that she'll be applying for some popular magazine job, forgot which mag. but this should tell you that our journalism school gives many openings.
let me know if you need anything else!

Hi,
I guess b/c i am single parented and thus very low income compared to others, I got more financial aid then regular NYUers. I'll be honest: if your family is middle or upper middle class, you're screwed. b/c you either have to be very broke, like me, so they'll give you good aid or very rich, like Mary Kate and Ashley. someone i knew was from a pretty "rich" upper middle class family and that person almost left NYU b/c according to NYU the parents were making enough money to support the student's education. Of course, the parents had gazillion of bills to pay like thousands in mortgage and their own loans from their student years! okay, well, not to say that everyone who is middle class or upper mid. is going to have problems. just some people do.
i didn't b/c i am on the poor side of the spectrum.

I have 14,890 in grants and federal aid. this i wont have to return. but other thousands (tuition is like over 16 grand) i have in loans. It's actually a very sweet deal, b/c many people are deep in debt!!
hope this helps

Hi,

hmm, i really didn't meet people i strongly disliked. honestly, many nyu kids are very nice. there's something about nyu community--if you belive in that sort of thing--that makes people communicate with each other effectively. there are some who come from well to do families and act like it. i didn't like this one girl, i din't even know her so this isn't really a valid reason to dislike her, but i just didn't like her!!! there was something about her--she kept saying "oh, yeah, i am going to paris and then prague and then....blah bla bla"--of course, i was the broke one in the room so i was like, why can't she just shut up???? but i have to remind myself that i don't know her, and sometimes what irritates us about others is not about others at all, but our unsolved problem.

my advise is: avoid. nyu is a big school. i don't dorm, so i dont settle down for too long to form bad relationships with people.

Thanks for your response!! Can you tell me about the summer program you took for HEOP/C-STEP? What am I going to be doing if I'm studying Journalism/Poli-Sci? Or is the summer course of study the same for everyone? Thanks.. also, what is the schedule like? Is it all day everyday? Thankss!

I'm guessing that since you don't dorm you're a commuter, and I will be a commuter next year. I'm really worried about not being part of the student body and just being this random face who people see in class but nowhere else. How difficult is it to get involved in extra curriculars and go to some parties here and there as a commuter? Do you have any random advice, and does it become tiring and aggravating to base everything around a train schedule?

If you like dealing with fake pseudo-intellectuals you'll love it here. I just hope to God you find a couple of down to earth people you can gel nicely with.

I second what firewalker is saying...

wait...isn't a fake pseudo-intellectual an intellectual. Double negative, you know.

:D :D :D

Sorry...bored. Biology sucks.

So...does that mean that NYU students are generally unbearable to be around? or is that just a generalization?

Firewalker is just mad because he can't get any.

lol i was just gonna post that about the double negative

YAY! smart people!

lol j/k

Have fun at NYU!

"If you like dealing with fake pseudo-intellectuals you'll love it here. I just hope to God you find a couple of down to earth people you can gel nicely with."
"I second what firewalker is saying..."

Guys...is it really that bad? If it is, can I get an example? I myself am from NYC (Queens) and am hoping to transfer to NYU and among the globs of ppl going there from my high school, I've gotten mixed reviews...some love it, some say the people are rude, but I never get a concrete example. And BTW, I go to school in Boston and I think the people here are much more RUDE here than back in NYC.

Gee we are not making crass generalizations here are we QNYergrl. You can find rude obnoxious people in an city. You can also find them on this discussion board too, have you looked in the mirror lately.
