Here To Help the Class of 2013 From: Class of 2012

shirn, are you going to attend Stern?
I'm only asking because I'm striving for Stern and I LOVE theater too, but I don't plan on majoring in it but still want to be involved in theater-related extra-curriculars and open arts classes.

hey! i just had another question for you.

do you know how many violinists they accept every year? and how many apply? and stuff like that?

thanks!

I heard that most of the theatre clubs are just acting and filming groups that do their own thing like sketch acting or collaborative filming. If anyone has alreaddy been accepted, then you should have your NYU home info so that you can set up your account. There's a bunch of listservs for the clubs at NYU. Some theatre ones are

ACTZ : musical theatre showcase to benefit Broadway Cares/ Equity Fights Aids
C.A.S.T. : not sure what that one's about
DANGERBOX : dangerbox is a hilarious improv group made of NYU acting alumni
EDLO : English and Dramatic literature society
GALLATIN THEATRE TROUPE: exactly what it says. just kids who like to act and go to gallatin

There's more, but too many to list. The clubs at NYU are broad and bizarre, but there's a lot for salsa, ballroom and belly dancing, martial arts, and even a coloring club (don't ask). Sign up for a listserv once our accepted to get emails from those groups.

I don't know how many violinists apply each year to Steinhardt, but as far as I'm aware there are around 20 first year violin students, and not necessarily freshman. Some are transfers. I wish I could give exact numbers. Most of the string classes are a mix of all undergraduate and some graduate, so it can be difficult to count accurately.

bondgirl:

Hayden Dining Hall has dedicated vegetarian and vegan options every single day. everything from curries to peanut noodles to soups to sandwiches and even a dedicated vegan option. i'm an omni, but sometimes i eat the vegan options; i love those vegan desserts. the grills always have veggie burgers. if you're in Kimmel and want a veggie stirfry from the Marketplace, if you ask very nicely, they will wash out the wok for you so there isn't meat contamination. i think PETA called NYU one of the most veggie/vegan friendly campuses in the nation, a few years ago.

i guess i'll post here as well, since i have a hit of nostalgia and came back to CC. . .

i am a native new yorker, junior, double major in the Steinhardt School of Culture, Education and Human Development and CAS, in media/culture and politics. i am a Welcome Week Leader and a Transfer Ambassador. i can help answer questions about the media program here, the city itself and most Welcome Week programs. yay!

NYU > The Office of Public Affairs > NYU Receives Record Number of Freshman Applications

those are the official numbers. over 37k people applied to NYU this year.

4,400 of those students will become the class of 2013.

it's the economy. education seems like a "safe bet" so people will take out loans for education and skimp everywhere else. parents view education and NYU a good investment.

Does NYU do non-majors theater productions?

The NYU community received an email from the school's president addressing the current state of the economy and what that means for the school. I'm sorry that I can't link it to an email, so I'll just high light important things that class of 2013 might want to know (just to reassure you guys).

--This is a record year for applications with well over 37,000 like missamericanpie said. Though the university is aware that with the current economy families will expect more aid for their students.

--The school's big on fundraising (you'll find out once you get here). If you don't know there was a campaign NYU had for several years to raise money for the school. We apparently raised more money than any other post-secondary institution ever. However, the money raised must be put to good use.

--I don't know how to phrase this so I'll quote it : "At the national level, there is increasing skepticism about the role played by SAT scores in admissions, and there is a growing population of outstanding students who begin their studies at one institution and then transfer to another institution...Thus, as we develop initiatives in the coming years to continue NYU's trajectory of improving student quality, simultaneously we must address the changing environment of undergraduate admissions." I know everyone applying is really smart, but yeah, I sucked at the SAT's but I've have a pretty solid gpa here, which confirms what every student's been saying for the past 10 years. SATs can't measure intelligence or success.

--There'll be more need based aid and less of a tuition hike (though, some tuition hike nonetheless).

--Don't worry about the Madoff scandal. It won't have a significant impact. (I was terrified though when I first heard about it on CNN. Not exactly the publicity I would want for my school).

--There's something called NYU Framework 2031. I suggest incoming students read it. It explains the goals of the university. It's somewhat vague explaining the how, but at least there's a marker for where the school wants to be. The URL is:

New York University > About NYU > NYU Framework 2031

The good news is that NYU is in a better position than most other universities having started saving well before this recession. Also, projects to improve facilities (the building of more practice rooms for the very numerous music students--majors and non-majors--and a better performing space for theatre students) won't be halted. I wish everyone the best of luck through admissions and enjoy the second half of senior year!

Oh, and if you get accepted to NYU and decide to go here, there's these monthly dinners with the President of NYU where you can get to know him on a more personal level than just as "that guy who runs the place". You might me emailed an invitation or you can sign up online (though I forget where). Go early on in the year before school really starts. It's nice. A lot of people want to vilify him for the crazy tuition and other issues at NYU, but at the end of the day he is only one man who tries his best to meet the needs of the majority. Oh, and he gives great hugs! He'll talk about it probably during welcome week.

@super

i'm totally going to hug him at like. . .graduation or something.

totally.

ok so i posted this in the housing dorm board discussion but thought someone might be able to help me in this group too:

i have been thinking about what dorm i want to request (i got in ED so i should hopefully get my first choice). does anyone have any pro/cons with Brittany (it's my #1 choice at the moment) but i would also consider hayden. my only issue with hayden is that it's the ED party dorm. i definitely plan on going out alot but i just wouldn't want people in the halls and stuff to distract me if i was studying or trying to sleep.

does anyone have any advice??

Brittany's ok. There's no dining hall and not much as far as lounges, but the rooms are pretty spacious and it's close to weinstein and palladium for food. Hayden's only a party dorm if you party...or have room mates who party while you try to study (but that's why there's Bobst). If you're really study conscious pick Brittany, unles you're good at blocking people out.

Did anyone receive an account from nyu?

Nope, haven't heard of any. I think they're aiming for early march to give out the email accounts

Do they mean they will let us activate our NetID account on late march? I want to start dealing already with all the visa stuff so I'd love to activate that account very soon.

No, they have to set up the email accounts and as soon as they do that, we can activate them. There are like over 1000 ED students accepted, so that does take time. lol I want mine in early March!

Hi, so i just got my likely letter but the financial package has not come in yet. My parents make $40,000 a year. How much financial aid can i expect to get?
-thanks

I got accepted into the Hotel Management Program at the SCPS school and i was just wondering if anyone here can hook me up with a contact info via aim, msn or something because i have a few questions that i think a current student in the same department is the best source of information.

thanks

Hey I have a question about internal transfer?
I was accepted to CAS, but then realized I wanted to do Stern. How hard is it to transfer internally> I’m an idiot, I know. I even had the scores to get into Stern, but I just didn’t apply…Im deciding between NYU and Barnard soooo this may help me decide?

Internal transfers all are dependent on your grades freshman year and the school you wish to transfer into. Transferring into Stern from any school is very, very hard. You really have to work your butt off. But I do know of a person or two who have successfully transferred from CAS to Stern. It’s hard, but possible with a lot of work.
