So I'm trying to start ahead of schedule and get these essays out of the way, but most of mine are ending up really long. The colleges I will be applying to haven't sent out applications yet, so I dunno the word limits. Dartmouth sent me one that said theirs is 250-500 words? Are most other schools looking for one that short? Anyone know the norm?

Well Dartmouth uses the common app which has an essay limit of 250-500 words which at least holds true for the 299 colleges using the common app [though additional essays may vary in length]. So I suggest first looking to see which of your colleges uses the common app and then work your way through college web sites.

If you really want to, you can use each college's specific application. I know that Rice doesn't quite have a limit, but said usually 2-3 pages is best.

thanks..one more question. We have to write an essay to make semi-finalist for ntl merit, I hear. I don't suppose anyone can tell me if it is a comparable/specific length? : )

Ouch. I have no idea on that one. I'd like to know too, if anyone has any information.
