Wanted to let those of you waiting on acceptance know that son has been accepted to CNS, but not in his first choice major. So, decisions, decisions, decisions. First choice math, 2nd computer science. Is it hard to switch? Seems like it would be easy to go from one to the other. Who knows???

Congrats, eaglemom and eagle! I know how exciting is to finally have that Longhorn acceptance in hand. Keep us posted. IIRC eagle is still looking at The College That Must Not Be Named. ;)

My older son is at UT Austin and has changed majors twice and he is only a second semester sophomore. He went from Liberal Arts-Psychology to Communications-PR to Communications-Advertising. The first transfer was easy. The second one he had to get a b or higher in a particular advertising class, which wasn’t easy, but the transfer was relatively painless. This may or may not be relevant to other majors, but his experience was pretty good.

Congratulations! I know a few people that transferred within the CNS, but not to/from the department of math.

UT-Austin and TAMU are both good schools. Your son is likely a great young man from an outstanding family. He’ll succeed no matter where he goes to school.

However, I can’t help but mention that UT-Austin’s math and CS departments have much better reputations - in both academia and the corporate world - than those at TAMU. The already top-10 CS department at UT will likely become a top-5 program after the Bill & Melinda Gates Computer Science Complex is completed in January of '13.

@StanTR: We are thrilled he has choices of such great schools. Your comments are MOST helpful. Since CS was his second choice, we hadn’t much looked in to it. Had no idea the CS program was top 10. Pretty impressive. I also didn’t know about the Gates complex. Son has worked for my husband’s software company and he programs in a couple of languages and that was all on his application, so I guess that is how he got in the door. Go figure.

eaglemom, congratulations! I’ll be following your son’s decision, since our own is accepted to both UT and A&M as well (engineering.) Interestingly, he liked A&M much more after a scholar’s day visit and says now he would pick it over UT. Of course, rankings put UT higher but ultimately it is his decision. Is your son leaning towards one school or the other?

@Givings: No leanings yet. TAMU is cheaper for cost of living and that is a consideration. Hubby and I are in Austin quite a bit, so that is also a consideration. He’ll be talking to advisors at both to get a good idea of which will be better suited to him.

As you learn things about each, I would be interested to hear your view point. :)

Congratulations!!! If your son stays in cs I might see him around next year!

Do you know if the letters are only coming out for CS or is it for the entire School of Natural Science? I’m still waiting for my friend’s acceptance into pre-pharmacy so that we can be room mates.
