Hi I was looking for some more info on this scholarship program. I looked through the website and profiles of past H-Y scholars but was looking for a little more. It says things such as leadership, service and great academics. I was wondering if I would fit the bill and maybe have a chance at this scholarship. I am currently a junior and will be applying next year.

Leadership- I will have 6 leadership positions when applying, 3 sport captain, NHS president, FCA leader, president and founder of a club.

Service- Teach Sunday school every weekend since sophomore year, looking to volunteer at a hospital this summer, various other hours from NHS and church things like that, big thing here is that the club I started is a community service club. Documenting all of the projects and hours we will be doing and hoping to get recognized by the school board.

Academics- Ranked 3/606 in my class. Will have 8/9 APs during high school, rest is all honors. Currently in an ACT prep class and taking practice tests.. looking to get a 33/34.

What do you think my chances are? How difficult is it to get this scholarship? Thanks!

This past year: over 800 applicants, 26 scholarships awarded. Start talking with you HS counselor now. They have a big portion of the application, as they have to “nominate” you and speak about you in terms of those four characteristics: leadership, personal integrity, scholarship and social responsibility. Your stats look good for a chance at admittance to ND (although you didn’t give your SAT), but H-Y scholars need to stand out more. Hard to say about you based on the little info here. Since the program is only three years old, there isn’t much more than what you’ve already looked at. Just remember, it may be a reach, but your odds of getting it if you don’t apply are definitely 0!

Hey hoopjack13!

Regardless of how amazing you are, its really tough to say if you’d be able to get the scholarship at this point. The program narrows down applicants by looking at how much they’ve done during high school, but the final stages of selections are made through interviews, which determine if you have the drive to continue your leadership successes during college and beyond.

The program doesn’t really value academics as much as, say, admissions would. Certainly, you’d have to be able to get admitted to ND to be eligible for the program (which given your academic stats, I’m pretty sure you’ll get in), but the program really cares more about what you’ve done with your life during HS. If you’ve founded a well-established service club, and you’ve been really involved throughout the past four years, you definitely have a shot.

Thank you so much for that! I know it’s going to be a huge reach to get the scholarship but you never know! I’m hoping my sets me apart is the service club… In the process of starting it! Maybe even lead some members this summer on some type of mission trip. What could I do to really stand out?
