The title essentially says it all. I mean, my stats are rather mediocre and I'm not even sure if I have a shot.

2010 on my SAT Reasoning: 610 Critical Reading / 630 Math / 770 Writing (But I just took it again last Saturday, hopefully I did dramatically better!)

Taking Lit, Math, and Spanish SAT II next month.

Going up to NYC to visit campus in a few weeks. What do you think? Yes? No? Absolutely no?

One of the main reasons I’m diffident is the ED aspect of it. If I don’t really have a shot at all, I could probably do ED elsewhere and save the time. I don’t know. But Columbia is one of my dream schools.

Maybe you could check out your other options, which could be reaches, but not such high reaches … that way you will have a better chance of getting in there… instead of missing out on them too…

if your grades are good and you have a bomb essay and recs, then i don’t see why you wouldn’t have a shot at columbia…in my opinion a 2010 is pretty good, i mean, people with 2300+ get rejected you know? it’s not all about the SAT’s…

pwoods, that reads like combined stats - i say because columbia aims for about 44% of the entering class to come in early, so 600 admits early would be more than 44% of the class.

do you have a shot? with higher SATs sure; is ED a more forgiving admissions cycle? yes. so you will have to decide then if you think it makes sense. but regarding your concern about applying ED elsewhere. you can apply ED 2nd round to schools that would be more sure bets if you don’t get into columbia, or apply to non-binding EA programs so it isn’t as if applying to columbia precludes you from applying early to other schools. the rule is you can only apply to one binding ED/EA program at a time, but most EA programs are not binding. and ED 2 programs work so long as you were not accepted to an ED normal program.

Now that all that stats crap is out of the way, I’d like to second adgeek’s advice. If you know you love Columbia, then you should apply ED. Don’t try to “game” the ED process by applying ED to a school that you’re likely to get into, but don’t truly love. If you want to go to Columbia, then apply ED. If you get in, then great! If not, you’ll apply RD (and maybe even EDII, if you like some of those little LACs) and still find a school that’s a great fit!
