Hey Berkeley Students!!

What can you tell me about life at Berkeley?

Good god...you actually expect us to answer such a HUGE query?! I mean...GO BEARS!

Marijuana use is decriminalized in Berkeley, let's start there.

Now, go here:

http://www.berkeley.edu/tour/life/index.html

More specifically

What do people usually do on weekends?
Do most students live on campus?
How strenuous are the academics?
and FUN FACTS

FUN FACTS...like I said, marijuana is legal in Berkeley, and there are some joints (pun intended) and clubs where you can go light up...

ANYWAY...

On the weekends, many people like to take off to the city for whatever - concerts. movies, lots and LOTS of many other events I can't think of right now, there's way too much stuff in San Francisco to list. For a daytrip/weekend trip Berkeley is not too far from some ski slopes as well, and there's other activities available in the "Bay" area. Like I said, on the weekends there's a huge amount of stuff offered for the students to go enjoy.

I think the number of students who live on campus is something like 37% of all students. A lot of students after their first years have developed close friendships with other students, and opt to live together outside the campus in either Cal Rentals or other residential areas. A group of people dividing the rent will actually result in the individuals paying a total amount for their housing that is cheaper than on-campus housing. It is highly preferred however that incoming students live their first years on-campus during their adjustment period.

The difficulty of the academics at Berkeley ranges of course from mildly difficult to insane; I've heard for the most part the science and mathematics majors are filled with sharp curves in classes and weeders, and pre-med here is pure agony (I've also heard some really nasty stuff from the Electricial Engineering and Computer Science majors - since it's a popular field, it's going to be intensely competitive). Anyone can ace a communications major of course, but the class Math 1B (2nd semester calculus) has had failure rates as high as 50 percent, so individual class difficulty varies wildly. The academic strenuity of Berkeley is subjective of course, but the university is known to grade somewhat lower than the GPA-inflated Ivy League and other prestigious universities. Then again, Berkeley has an excellent elective program with DeCal, wherein students can propose ideas and perogatives for creating classes designed to educate students in a socially relevant topics, varying from Anthropology of Surfing to The Simpsons and Philosophy; hell there's even a DeCal class dedicated solely on the band Radiohead.

Will some other Golden Bears back me up here! XP

Any society that condones drug use is, to me, irresponsible.

Holy ****, you know your stuff Strykur.

I'll be sure to add an equally thoughtful post once I get acquainted with the Berkeley lifestyle...

You should check out c o l l ege pr ow ler or the berkeley lj forum:

http://community.livejournal.com/ucberkeley/

^Has a lot of random stuff that is quite telling about the students, school and surrounding community.

"Any society that condones drug use is, to me, irresponsible."

As opposed to a society than condones the use of alcohol?

I never said I agree with that either.

go bears!

I guess all societies in Canada are all very irresponsible.

Well then, it's a good thing I don't live there.

OP, couldn't you have posted this in the Berkeley forum?

Hey Berkeley students, may I be as so bold as to inquire what were some of your high school stats?

What a blanket judgemental statement... come on, give a little more detail and back up your unqualified statement. "drug use" is AWFULLY broad... and without proper argumentation you're just looking like a fool with your statement. You know, without the facts, you look, well, stupid. Call 1-800-the-truth to get the facts about tobacco.

shoot...I used Tylenol tonight. I hope I am still considered a responsible person in your eyes.

There you go. Try doing a search next time.

-Facts To support my opinion? I could of course supply many, but like all arguments they would only be countered by other, more absurd studies, surveys, etc. Recreational drug use serves no benefit to society and its members. Thus, any government body that allows it is doing a great disservice to its continuants.

"shoot...I used Tylenol tonight. I hope I am still considered a responsible person in your eyes."

-As long as you're not using the Tylenol to get high and cause an undue burden on society, yep; I'm ok with it.

"Thus, any government body that allows it is doing a great disservice to its continuants. "

That would be freedom of choice, and we can't have any of that now can we?

Which is exactly why we let people set buildings on fire. Nothing like choice....
