is this a tough schedule for a freshman's fall quarter. this is my first quarter at UCI and im really excited, i dont want to rush into my academics too early and end up regretting by not getting the grades i want. is this a manageable schedule

my major is bio sci btw

i have bio sci 93
chem 1a
hum core lecture and writing 1a

Also, on a side note i need some advice

i got a 5 on the AP BIO exam, so this would allow me to waive out of bio sci 93 and 94, and go directly to 97 starting my freshman year, is this a wise decision? would you do it?

plus i kinda suck at chemistry would you recommend taking 1p before taking 1a? ive only had 1 year of HS chem...

thanks!
zot zot

Also is taking bio 2a worth it? do you get to know more about research opportunities and things of that nature or is just another bio class with bio material

I’m also an incoming freshman, and was a former biosci major, now switched to Undeclared, trying to get back into my original major, which was Business Administration.

What is writing 1a? I thought Hum Core satisfies all writing reqs?

Additionally, I would talk to a counselor and follow their recommendations about starting with bio 97.

My advice is for you to start with chem 1a, since they start from the beginning anyway.

From what I’ve heard, bio 2a is only worth it if you’re willing to wake up for it, and actually pay attention during the seminar.

It is not a ‘class’ persay, I guess you do get to know more about research opportunities, etc.

I don’t know your study habits, but I think your load should be fine. But I’m no expert, I’m just another incoming freshman…

I see that you posted a similar post on anteaterforum.com… Not the best place to get academic advice, lot of smart-asses and internal drama over ownership. Anyways:

Starting with 97 is not even an option for you. For bio majors, it is required that you take 93 and 94, regardless of AP scores: <a href=“UCI General Catalogue Archives”>http://www.editor.uci.edu/09-10/intro/intro.11a.pdf . If you were not a bio major, your AP score may exempt you from one category breadth in the natural sciences… but that’s not the case and you will have to take 93 and 94.

I’ve never heard of writing 1a (it’s not even shown in Websoc as a class being offered Fall), maybe you’re talking about writing 39A which wouldn’t make sense taking concurrently with humanities core.

Bio 2a is a waste of time unless you have a genuine interest… if you want info about research, read up on the bio faculty list of research opportunities.

Take Chem 1A. It’s really basic chemistry, I’d say highschool chemistry was harder. 1P is a waste of time, and you won’t be able to have a common chemistry ground with 90% of your peers since they are all in 1A. Plus, if you take 1P, you will have to take 1A in the winter, and 1B in spring, and then take 1C in the summer (since ochem 51a starts fall, but I guess it really doesn’t matter).

Your course load is average for a freshman, manageable.

hey guys sorrry for the misconception i just meant humanties core the lecture and the writing class associated with it, so its just the first set of hum classes available to a freshman, again sorry for the n00b mistake

so with that said, basically im taking

bio sci 93
hum core
and chem 1a, is that manageable

and haha thanks for letting me know AEF is a waste of time, i just wanted some input LOL

Jaganshi thanks again what u said was really helpful!!

In no particular order, here’s my perspective:

Take bio 2a is not worth it. It’s only worth it if you’re absolutely 100% completely clueless about the bio program at UCI.

I knew someone who took genetics fall fresh year and got an A. It’s just, if you waive, you don’t get free easy A’s from 93 and 94 (basically repeat material from AP bio).

I do not recommend taking Chem 1p unless you’re okay with taking summer school to catch up someday.

Yes that schedule is manageable but I wouldn’t recommend hum core unless you’re a hum major/minor. You get the same as taking classes individually but with less freedom of what you’re studying.
