I recognize the airport, I think... Burbank? Welcome and good luck to your son! We did the same thing last year except our son departed from LAX on a red eye flight and got into BWI about 3 hours before the bus to USNA.

Now we are on the verge of taking him back for I-Day and I can't believe this past year went so quickly! I am both so very happy (proud) and sad (losing my baby)!

and she was talking in that NAVY LINGO already!!!

No, madam, she was merely demonstrating the exceedingly fine education one can get from USNA after just one week, and as a civilian to boot. Just because you landlubbers are left behind in the same dark murk of ignorance that surrounds Army for all eternity is no reason to suggest there is anything wrong with HER. :D

Now imagine her after four years. It will be akin to her evolving into a new and superior species. :D

You should try it sometime. Just walking around the Yard is enough to kick your IQ up about 10 points. :D

Yes Burbank! Closer to us and I really liked it for it's convenience, ease of parking, and it has a good coffee shop. We usually do go out of LAX, but as you already know, it's a zoo. Since he's only 16, I thought smaller might be a little easier to navigate.

MOM2LOLA thanks for the update!!! I've been wondering about what's been going on. Especially when mock indoc and the social take place. My son, James, is in Delta he told me when I dropped him off. I wonder what Lola means by being squared away. We met some cadre at the alumni association dinner and they were really nice, like she said. I'm gonna pm you my son's name but I may have to readjust my settings.

Am I gonna have to start a translation thread? ;)

Something being "squared away" means it is the way it's SUPPOSED to be.

So, if a PERSON is squared away, they are smart, well-dressed, well-groomed, well-mannered, etc.

If a ROOM is squared away, it is neat, clean, with a place for everything and everything in its place. (Usage example from the great Gunnery Sergeant Hartman: "I want that head so sanitary and squared away that the Virgin Mary herself would be PROUD to go in there and take a dump!")

If a GROUP or UNIT is squared away, it means everything about them is neat, organized, and functioning well, especially their MORALE.

Can be used as an adjective or a verb (Another Gunnery Sergeant Hartman example: "You'd best square your ass away and start ****ing me Tiffany cufflinks!"), and applied to any noun.

Now, go square yourself away on the rest of the lingo. You're gonna need it! :D

Thanks for the update. Megan says food is just okay. She's kind of a semi-veggie. What does CFA stand for? Lola should have met Megan since she (Megan) was going to do the Martial Arts segment. Megan is 1st Degree Black Belt in Tiger Schulman Karate. Hope they all had fun.

Z - it looks like you'll have to be our official translator. 2010 not even inducted yet and here comes 2011. Lots of education ahead. I could use that Hartman quote to post on my boys' bathroom door.

LOL!

That movie is full of gems! :D

It is interesting how the 2010 traffic has died down and how 2011 is starting up. "Are my quals good enough?" threads beginning to pop up again.

Heard the same -Mock Indoc and Social Mixer- same nite. Has Lola met Megan (Moyette) yet? I see that they are both in Charlie Co. Hope all is well with all of them. LOL

bmoyet - the CFA is the Candidate Fitness Assessment test those at NASS all do - it's sit ups, pull ups, basketball throw, mile run, push ups...the candidate is scored by his Squad Leader and the score is entered as a part of their application process. Your child can take this test again at home with a coach during the school year, following strict instructions USNA provides - if they are unhappy with their scores. In our case, our daughter was very physically fit from being a 5 year club swimmer and 3 years of Civil Air Patrol training - so she had really high scores. Also you might get an email during the week from your Squad Leader informing you that your child passed his/her CFA - we did last summer ....getting it before NASS was even finished. I asked her Squad Leader at the end of the session about the significance of this and he just said all candidates need to pass with the best scores they can, as it adds to the point totals for their overall Application before the Admissions Board.

Thanks for the heads up. Megan told me Charlie Co. took the CFA exam on Monday and all pre-plebes in 'C' Co. passed- probably minimum standard. I guess they all get ranked according to the amount of each individual exercise he or she is able to perform within the time allotted.

In Jake's case, he never got any email or anything ranking him. He just knew he passed. Nothing was ever logged on CIS or the Blue and Gold info either.

Social Mixer and Mock Indoc on the same night? Aww...they don't get to experience being nice and dirty and having all the shouting, crazy-fun orders, screaming, and running around on the same night? Bummer. I thought that was kinda fun.

Bmoyet .. I will pass Meghans name to Lola. She said they did cancel the social and have Mock Idoc 2night and they cannot wait. She called last night and they are so sad it is coming to an end. :(
