Alright im at the end of my junior year and i have taken my sat and act once and plan on taking again as much as i can, but im not doing so hot like just below average. I really dont know why because im a straight A student all 3 years of high school and in honor and ap classes. I guess test taking is not my thing, but I really dont understand that? anyone have some tips for me or is anyone in the same boat?
any advice is needed
Thanks, Andrea

Straight A’s does not mean you are smart. And use the collegeboard book to help studying.

oh I wasn’t implying I am smart
but I’m not like average I’m top in my class

What is “just below average”? Below 1500/2400? Or below the 2100+ that seems to be typical on CC? If it’s the former, your school must have some serious grade inflation…
Either way, you just need to practice more. Go through all the prep books and try different strategies to see which ones work best for you. You have the wrong attitude towards taking these tests: “plan on taking again as much as I can”. You DO NOT need to take the SAT and ACT excessively, which could marginally increase your score just by chance. What you should do is focus over the summer, study from prep books, practice different techniques, and take practice tests. If your practice test scores don’t improve, try to find a tutor or a study group or even a prep course. You should decide which test, the SAT or ACT, is easier for you. Then you should take that test in the fall and your score should increase.
P.S. If you are already signed up for the June SAT (not sure of ACT test dates), only take it if you have enough time to sit down and study for it.

Yes im below 1500 and trust me im in some hard classes, Im a hard working student that earns my grades, I guess i just dont have the right test taking ability or strategies.
I am getting some help from my Math teacher over the summer who has been reading up on all the strategies and plans on mastering them and help from my english teacher who has been trying to help us all year at my school, but really I just need one on one from her. I have study books and i have been reading them since I got my scores back in April. It may be that my school never properly prepared us for these tests. Thank you for your advice!

To be quite honest, that’s not their job; thanks to NCLB they have a raft of other state-mandated exams to prepare you for.

Simply put, drag yourself to a designated study area for three hours 3/7 days a week during the summer. Once there, practice a section of the exam you have trouble with until knowledge and test-taking strategies are streaming from your nostrils.

haha planning on it
well i go to a private school and I am not sure we have ever taken any state mandated exams except for the stanford achievement test which is nothing like the SAT or ACT

Ah, I see. Well, you should be going to a designated study area (I used my local library’s study room) regardless, and do so at regular intervals. It’s extremely important to build up the mental endurance and the discipline required for a four-hour exam. At a certain point, the SAT is simply testing how long you can last, not necessarily what you know.

alright
thank you very much for your advice will be doing every bit of it
my teacher and I will be going to a library and i’m starting to go there this week to prepare for the June SAT
