Hi! I know it’s that time of year soon where people are looking around and wondering about and applying to schools! If you happen upon this post and have any questions about our school/program, I will be GLAD to answer your questions as a current student!!! Also check out the BW News thread to see what’s happening with our program/alum!

Hope to hear from you!

What is the date of the november audition? MY D visited last year and they gave us the date but we can’t find it. She LOVED Baldwin Wallace and it is very high on her list right now. Did the new dance person start this year? IF so, how do you like her?

Hello! The november audition will be on the 7th! I’ll see you then! : )

Anna Maria-- the new dance teacher-- starts with us this year!!! We’re very excited to have her join the BW family! I’ll check back with you after the first couple of classes and give you the scoop! : )

If you have any other questions let me know!!

Do you happen to know what this years Audition Dates are? I can’t seem to find this on the website and it will be helpful as we juggle the schedule. Also, would you say BW is “heavy” on acting, dance, or voice? We are just trying to gage the program.

Hello! The dates are the following:
11/7/09
1/16/10
1/23/10
2/13/10
2/20/10

BW’s music theatre program is offered through our conservatory, and the graduates receive a bachelor of music degree (BM) instead of a bachelor of fine arts degree (BFA) like most other schools. That means we take a LOT of music classes. Four semester of theory and ear training/sight singing (divided by level), a eurhythmics class, mandatory piano (or another instrument if you’re already proficient, then you can take another instrument), choir… and more! It’s a lot, but it makes us incredible, hirable musicians! We also have an hour voice lesson every week as well as a studio class where all of the students that study with your teacher get together and sing through what they’re working on.

We are revamping our dance program a little in the next few years since we’re getting a new teacher. But long story short, though we get incredible acting training from Vicky Bussert and Scott Plate (and members of the theatre faculty), and take other core acting/theatre classes, we are a heavily music based school. Not right for everyone, but it’s all about finding the school that’s a perfect fit!

Thank you for the information. We will take a look at it…

My Daughter is a Junior in HS this year and is just beginning the college search…
She loves MT but is concerned that she’ll not be able to ‘put food on the table’ if she gets a degree in that so wondered if she should try to do an Arts/Theater management/admin degree with a MT minor or concentration. Is this possible at BW?

I don’t have very much knowledge about this specific matter. Here’s what I can tell you: Without any kind of double major or minor, I’ve taken 18 credit hours every semester. So definitely it will cost you a lot more since you would have to take more hours every semester (hours past 18 cost extra). Also, it wouldn’t be recommended because it would give her less time to commit to the performance/practice aspect. I would call admissions to get more logistic info… (440) 826-2368

I will say, though, that our program got an amazing number of responses from our showcase in NY last spring, and 14/15 were quickly signed with agents. Two graduates from 09 are on Broadway. So, they’re not going hungry!! : ) It’s a risky business, but our graduates are doing very well-- take a look at the BW NEWS thread!!

Sorry I can’t offer more info!

Hello BWMT2012!

I’m currently a Senior in High School and am excitedly although nervously preparing for my Baldwin-Wallace audition! My family and I visited the school a couple weeks back and i absolutely loved it! My mom even told me that if i don’t get into the conservatory i should still go there because she thought it fit my personality. And i agree! So i am working very hard to get into the conservatory!

With that i have a few questions. I apologize in advance if this becomes tedious or boring! I feel like its such a huge benefit to be able to talk to a student in the MT program, and your advice is invaluable to me!

I’m planning on auditioning in January. I will have more time to prepare and work with a vocal instructor (hopefully soon!). I was just wondering if when you audition has any negative effects on being accepted? For example, those who audition in Nov. have a greater chance of getting in? I’m not really sure about that. Also, what are generally good songs for the auditions and what are ones that you should probably stay away from? I’m a rather short, younger looking guy so i was thinking of “Nothings gonna harm you”, the song Toby songs in Sweeney Todd because it would show me portraying a character that fits me.

Mrs. Evans told us that generally around 200-250 audition. I was curious to know what the general male to female ratio of those auditioning is, and how your chances (me being a guy) are affected depending on if your male or female, if there is any difference. (where i’m from there’s always a huge shortage of guys in theater).
Do the current BW MT students attend the auditions? I know an incoming freshmen to the MT program, so i was curious if he would be at auditions or not (although i know i should just ask him!)

Lastly, I was curious how much they weight the singing/acting versus the dancing in terms of acceptance to the program? I heard BW is more focuses on music. I can sort of dance, but i’ve never had any real training and im sure that a few classes would be extremely beneficial if i actually got into the program.

Gee, i think thats all for now. I’m sorry there’s a lot of questions in there, and i greatly appreciate your advice and help. Hopefully someday we may be fellow MT majors!

Thanks so much.

There was a time when i could hardly sing a note in tune (the rest of my family are not really vocally inclined)… ive spent the last year and 1/2 working as hard as i can to improve myself. I now believe that i can accomplish this goal, and with a lot more hard work and perhaps a little bit of luck i can be accepted into this amazing school. I cannot imagine my life without theater and music. Thanks for your time!

The date of your audition doesn’t really have much of an effect. I auditioned in January. We do have a wait-list (I was on it). The benefit of auditioning earlier is that you know the results sooner! I can’t tell you what songs to sing-- choosing is part of the fun! Just know that if you do something as popular as Sweeney (or anything that well known), you run the risk of being compared to the people who have done it before. So if you don’t compare and can’t compete, find something else! There’s a TON of material out there!!

The classes are usually pretty even gender wise. Please read the above posts for the information about music vs. other things. The main point of the audition is to capture the attention of the auditors, and make them want to spend the next 4 years working with you. I mean, yes, you need to be able to sing and dance and act, but it’s so much more than that, too. If you’re not feeling confident about dancing, try to take some classes before the audition. We have a new dance teacher starting this year, so the dance aspect of our program will be growing!!!

The current student’s do not watch the auditions. We have a master class on every audition day that the auditioners will observe, but that’s the only real interaction (besides the kids that are “working” the audition).

hope this helps!

Thank you very much for the advice!

Can you please describe the dance audition more throughly?

Well, I wish I could! We just got a new dance teacher this year, so I’m not exactly sure how the audition will go. I CAN say that our new teacher is INCREDIBLE and lovely and our dance program is going to be growing and getting stronger in the coming years! The audition will be after everyone has sung and after the master class. You will all walk over to the dance studio and learn a combination from Anna Maria, and then do it in small groups.

I was wondering if spots for the November 7th audition date were filling up? I am almost done with my application, but I’m still perfecting my essay. I just wanted to make sure I still have time! Thank you!!!

Technically, you have until November 1, but you should call conservatory admissions:

(440) 826-2368

See you soon!

Thanks for the advice. I think i’ve got my audition songs narrowed down and i am quite excited. I am going to audition in january (whenever i get my essay finished!)

Can anybody give me information on what a student has to go through if they want to transfer to BW’s MT program?

svb…are you looking to transfer already? Keep an open mind as school has only been in session for a month of so and it takes time for many students to adjust. :)

soozievt= i know its only been a month! this information actually isnt for me, but a friend. things at penn state are going very well you actually may be able to help me. is there any way i can reach you besides private messaging since your’s is full? thanks!

You will still audition and apply-- the year you enter as (freshman vs. sophomore etc. ) will depend on how similar the programs are. most of the catch up work people have to do is in the music classes.
