Considering the scholarship is meant to entice the cream of the crop applicants, I'm just wondering how many of you Regents are thinking of choosing Berkeley? Why or why not?

For me, east coast privates have alread won my heart.

I'm thinking, but I'm not sure, (Choice between Penn, Rice, Duke, JHU and Berkeley). What exactly does it mean? How important is it?

What majors are two you considering? Because for what it's worth, Berkeley's engineering is ranked #2 nationally.

I'm considering engineering or a combination of engineering and business, and I got into MIT.

Either way, for undergrad at the very least, I think MIT has the upperhand.

I'm not really sure of its significance other than the monetary benefit. I believe you get guaranteed housing all four years and some other preferential treatements, but someone else can expand on that.

I'm only a high school senior (Wow, how it feels to be the underdog again). So hopefully someone at Cal can help you out here...

But, eh, I would still go to MIT unless Berkeley ends up substantially (15k+/yr) cheaper. Congrats. :)

Regents have the distiction of being a Regent Scholar. There are only 200 per class. It's $1000 per year unless you are financially needy, then can be up to a full ride dependent on need. You get 4 years housing, the right to purchase a parking permit 1st year (most people do not have or need cars.) And a low number for registration of classes. There are other perks. Those are the key things. UCLA Regents is something like $5000-$6000/yr. They offer 4 year housing for all incoming freshmen. UCD has special Regents housing.
The only place you can be a Cal Regents Scholar is at Berkeley. And you get $1000... :)

My cousin chose Cal over MIT for EECS and is graduating this year. It was a good decision for her.

UCLA or UCB.... I like Cal a lot better, but UCLA gives more stable financial aid.

How and when did you hear that you got the Regents Scholarship? Did you get something in the mail or did you find out online? My daughter interviewed for Regents, but hasn't heard anything.

You get the message when you sign into your MyBerkeley account. I'm not sure what it says if you don't get it, but if you do, it's quite obvious.

We tried to log onto my daughter's myberkeley a few hours ago and it said the site was being serviced and unavailable. Did you find out online today?

yes, its online today on your admit page

SQL: Wait until you see both UCLA and Cal's total financial aid for yourself before saying that. I don't get any need based aid. But I have friends from last year that say Cal offered less in loans and more in grants.

i got all the uc regents, but yes some privates have the upper hand in my heart. like pomona college- however, i doubt i can get in pomona. so yes berk and LA have me now

im turning down regents for alot of reasons...mostly because the award isnt substantial and because i like ucla over berkeley a hundred times over

madamebovary: if you have regent stats, you should get into Pomona. It's not that difficult to get into!

Hey guys!
As you all know college decisions are out, or at least most of them. I got into all the UCs and Johns Hopkins University. However, I am currently debating between UC Berkeley and Johns Hopkins. If I attend Johns Hopkins, I will definitely go for medical. For UC Berkeley, I will major in EECS, but most likely I will move out from the engineering major into something like bioengineering because I am also debating between medical and engineering, though I am leaning a little bit towards medical than engineering. For UC Berkeley, I received the Regents Scholarship, which, though I haven't checked it yet, will probably provide me with a significant amount of aid. Furthermore, being a CA resident would also greatly help me out. On the other side, Johns Hopkins is all the way across the country. JHU is providing me some financial aid for their nearly $50,000 price tag, almost half the price is paid for me. Thus, for JHU I will probably have to pay around $25-$30,000. Aiya!! So much to think about. Please help. JHU vs. CAL O_o HELP!

wow.. i got waitlisted by pomona :(

@CA2006: I looked at the aid for both UCLA and Berkeley and both packages are comparable. However, UCLA's seems more stable just because I'm always guaranteed to get at least $5,500. Nevertheless, I prefer Berkeley over UCLA, but I don't think I'll take either.

CTBear,
You are definitely between a rock and a hard Place. UCB EECS is the most competitive program, it's very hard to get good grades. You need good grades to get into a good medical school.

Other than monetary benefits, how does Regents help? I'm asking cuz I am planning to do pre-med....so I need the grading to work if not in my favor not to work against me.
