Hey SFS people

I was just wondering what you guys wrote about for your World's Biggest Problem essay. Out of curiosity and nothing else, lol

I wrote about overpopulation/unwanted pregnancies due to the lack of availability of birth control and education about birth control in the third world. I also wrote about the inability of the WHO to provide women with reproductive health information, products, classes, etc, and how I think this needs to be changed. The topic is a little lame (and I didn't spend as much time on the essay as I probably should have) but I suppose it's slightly more original than the more run-of-the-mill "War in Iraq" or "conflict between Israel and Palestine" (not that those aren't perfectly fine topics or very valid problems, I just imagine they were written about a lot).

no, that's actually an interesting topic, and one that probably wouldn't come up often. and it IS an extremely important problem. i give you five stars!

i had such a hard time trying to explain my topic in my essay that i don't want to try to restate it again. the first half of it follows.. i think it's pretty straight foward. i want to major in culture and government, with an emphasis on the middle east and asia, so i thought that it fit.

Asia currently lacks the strong kind of union that has been propelling Europe through recent years. While Europe is united by the evolution of their history and common cultural traits, Asia is a fractured group of countries, many of which are new economic and political powers trying to establish their strength and position in the post-cold war world.
Given, Asia does have some multilateral unions, such as the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and Asian Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC). However, these organizations lack the political clout of European organizations such as the EU and NATO. Asia is also loosely held together by the bilateral workings of many governments, such as the relationship between Japan and South Korea. Although these relationships do produce results, Asia would be better off if there was a strong union.

Asia needs to worry about future cooperation. A new kind of nationalism has developed in China, Japan, and South Korea, fueled by economic growth and the steps taken away from their global positions during the cold war. Development of a central organization would give Asia new independence because it would not rely on other countries, mainly the US, to mediate relationships. As crises occur in the next few years, Asia will have a chance to establish it’s own domain and ability to solve problems.

my biggest insecurity about my topic/essay is that it probably reads like i spend too much of my time watching cspan and reading the economist + harpers.... but i do.

I wrote about the need to reform the UN particulrarly the need for an enlarged Security Council.

I wrote about aids

Genocide in Sudan/Darfur.

lol. you guys probably won't believe what i wrote about. my essay was FUNNY, incredibly, which...it probably SHOULDN'T have been, given how serious the topic was lol. Hopefully my adcom has a sense of humor :-/

we had to do this survey in AP Gov to simulate the Gallup poll. and one of the questions was, "What do you think is the biggest problem confronting our society?" I dutifully went around asking everyone...and was shocked when all I got were blank stares and the occasional "Bush is a moron!" The only people who gave answers like the ones you all listed were kids in my AP Bio class that I begged to fill it out. I then thought to myself, Wow. IGNORANCE is the problem.

I actually wrote about how ignorance was extremely dangerous. and made it funny. there is NO WAY i'm getting in, lol. in comparison to all of yours, mine seems like such a non-answer.

Oh well. The essay shows who I am - a positive person that can portray awful situations optimistically. If they don't like it, I don't belong there.

I wrote about the breakdown of multinational organizations, particularly the UN...I was accepted EA.

i wrote about world debt in africa. i thought it was really good...but i was deferred early action.

Mine was good too, but I was also deferred. I don't think essays are really THAT important for Gtown...

i wrote about the dangers of globalization :)

I wrote about the proliferation of small arms and light weapons. I hope it has worked for me!

Well if I had applied to SFS, I probably would have written about overpopulation and the environmental/social effects of it.

But I didn't apply to SFS, I applied to the College EA and was accepted. So, :D.

I wrote about education and illiteracy.

I wrote about the need for reform in humanitaria action, and I got in last year

I'm in SFS so if any of you have questions for the BEST school at GTown, lol! Just ask! Best of luck to RDs!

haha, i have a question: do you have a shot if you're not valedictorian?

yes, I wasn't! I was top 15%!

I wrote about nuclear weapons proliferation in Iran and the need for diplomacy.
