HHMI Summer Student Program

Is anyone familiar with this program? I've been told application is through HHMI, but the website states one applies to the lab directly. I'm confused--and there's no contact information on the website, either.

I am familiar with this, as my daughter did the one at Princeton last summer, and my husband is part of the summer HHMI faculty at another university.

Howard Hughes Medical Institute sponsors summer research in the biosciences at different institutions – IIRC, there are about 15 of them throughout the US. You apply to the program through the university that runs them, not through HHMI. For instance, Princeton’s is here:

[Princeton University - Department of Molecular Biology - Summer Undergraduate Research Program](<a href=“Department of Molecular Biology”>Department of Molecular Biology)

Go to the HHMI site and click on the participating universities to see which accept applications and what their individual focus is. Princeton’s program includes systems, developmental, and computational neuroscience. Some focus exclusively on, say, genomics. Check the list of students for each university to see what percentage of outside students they accept. Often, you cannot get into a program that is not directly associated with your university if you come from a research university. Minorities and students from LACs are usually given priority.

Hope this helps.

That’s a different sort of thing. I’m referring to this:

[HHMI: HHMI Summer Student Program](http://www.hhmi.org/research/investigators/summer_student.html)

You can click on individual investigators to see where they are based and what they research. From there, it shouldn’t be too difficult to find their contact info using an institution or even Google search.

Note that the investigators primarily host undergraduates, as the HHMI summer undergraduate programs do, and that there is some crossover. For instance, the PI that my D worked with is listed as an HHMI investigator, suggesting that these researchers participate in both one-on-one and broader HHMI programs.

I know what the website says and I have a list of investigators I’d like to work with. I was told by an HHMI investigator that I apply through HHMI, hence my confusion. So what I’m looking for is someone who is familiar with the program (ie, has applied/participated) and can tell me what the deal is. I’ve sent some e-mails, so I’m hoping to get replies that make sense, but I figured this might be faster.
