So, I notice Brown uses the common app, which asks one 200 word essay about the applicant’s reasons for transferring (and also a question about the applicant’s favorite activity). The Brown supplement asks a couple of other short questions and places a clear writing limit on each question.

What I’m wondering, to get to the point, is if it would be acceptable to answer these questions in one, continuous essay–perhaps by saying “see attached sheet” on each question–and then just going for it.

I have a solid story to tell and feel confident I can justify my claim to the school, or at least make a reasonable presentation about why I’d like to go, in a two to three page essay. I can’t really get across the narrative I’ve envisioned within the application as they’ve structured it.

It would no doubt be a risk to defy their instructions, but it might be more of a risk to stick to a format that I don’t feel represents me well.

So, has anyone else done this or heard of it working? Do you think its plain stupid and want to talk me out of it?

thanks.

I know nothing about transferring to Brown, but from my experience as a normal applicant, I’d advise you to stick to Brown’s parameters. Every year they get students who break their guidelines, and from what I’ve heard, they get pretty annoyed at this. If I were you, I’d stick to their guidelines, then attach a further essay to your application if there’s still more you’d like to explain.

i’d be interested in other people’s opinions on this. thanks.

I agree with bruno14 here.

I think you should answer the questions they ask in the space provided. If you need to write more, you can attach another document to the Brown supplement on the Common App. Also, you might want to consider using this longer essay as your main Common App essay instead of using it on the Brown supplement.

It is possible to write two brief essays whose ideas merge beautifully. It is possible to answer, fully, two different questions, while still getting the story you want told.

It’s time to get creative with your writing.

I also agree that if you can’t make it work with the two essays, don’t force it and just make that your Common App essay.
