<--- Hi, current, dorming freshman, AMA

Ask me almost anything.

do you take chem at stony brook? if so, how do you like it, is it hard, etc?

I’m actually a bio major, but I did take Chem 131, gen chem I last semester. I can’t speak for higher level chemistry courses, but regular gen chem + lab really isn’t bad at all. I didn’t take chemistry in high school - I opted for ap physics - and I had no issue pulling top grades in class. All tests are 50 or so multiple choice with a question or two that doesn’t count. Recitation and clicker questions make up a pretty sizable portion of your grade, and there really isn’t an excuse for doing poorly with these. Test questions can come out of nowhere because of how many different professors teach the class though. The math is basic precalc stuff, but knowing derivatives might help with graphs and whatnot.

That said chem 141 (honors gen chem for people who took ap chem in high school) is a completely different beast. No multiple choice, much faster pace and much less forgiving. I would recommend avoiding it, even if you’ve taken ap chem. No reason to risk your gpa for nothing. I can’t speak to the math requirements since I only know the course because my roommate took it.

Chem 129 is for people who score poorly on the math placement test, below a 4 I believe. Avoid at all costs. Tons more homework than 131, and 129 ( a required coreq) is absolutely pointless and a total waste of time.

Did you take CHE 133 last semester(chem lab 1)?

im actually taking it now, whats up?

What is the best quad

Hrmm thats a tough one.
First things first, you have to decide if you want to live in a double or a suite. I STRONGLY recommend choosing to live in a suite. In a suite, you have either a kitchen OR a living room (this depends on the specific building that you are in, not on the quad) and connected to this common area are a private bathroom w/ shower just for your suite, and 3 double rooms. Basically, this means you instantly have 5 other friends instead of 1, and you have a better chance of having at least a few people you connect with. Also suites tend to mix together more than the doubles seem to, since they have so much more room. The common room has two couches and a coffee table which can easily fit around a 50" hdtv with an xbox and plenty of other things. Couches can be either 3 or 2 seaters. You can get away with bringing in those round fold-able fabric chairs from target as long as you store them during inspection.

Each of the rooms in the suite has all the furniture that you would have gotten in a traditional double. There is a cleaning lady who cleans your bathroom weekly and generally speaking its just alot cleaner than the doubles. You don’t have to go to the hallway to go to the bathroom, nuff said.

In order to room in suites though, you need to dorm in either Roth, or Tabler quads. Roth is not as “pretty” as Tabler, but it is the most popular quad on campus, is closest to classes, has air conditioning, and has Roth Cafe, which is open till 2 am. You would also have easy access to Dunkin Donuts in Tabler quad. Roth quad tends to fill up first though, so get your preferences in really really early. It’s science and society i believe.

Tabler is a basic suite style which doesn’t have air conditioning, and is really, really far from anything. You do have dunkin donuts, but it has the worst hours of all time. To eat, the closest thing is Roth Cafe, which is a pain in the winter. You can also take the rape trail to Kelly, its safe, i promise ; )

There’s also Nobel Halls that is entirely suite style.

When you say you should put in your preferences for dorms really early, when exactly are you talking? How soon will Roth fill up? Like what month? Also, people say there is “cutthroat” competition if you’re going into the sciences. Is that true, and if so how? Thanks for helping, I’m just a tad nervous.

Roth fills up before admitted student days, well before them. I enrolled on admitted student day and roth was already completely full. My friend who knew he was coming here did get in Roth though, so plenty freshman, can it just comes down to when you enroll and fill out your survey. It will be full before they stop accepting people most likely.

There are alot of science majors, but that said, I don’t see much cutthroat competition in my classes yet. Definitely not in gen chem anyway. There are facebook groups for bio 201,202,203, chem 129,131,132 that are active and people are constantly asking for and receiving help on them. Alot of people also work through the homework together, since its the same questions with different numbers.
Here’s the however,
there are very small curves in genchem, and there is alot of competition to get high grades since the class pretty much falls in a bell curve. This isn’t cornell, people won’t burn your textbooks in the middle of the night, but do know that there is competition.

Hi, im trying to figure out what dorms to choose? can you give any suggestions?
