Im a rising high school senior and was wondering taking up an EMT course (and becoming EMT certified) because it looks good to have it on application especially if you have it for BS/MD programs. Do you guys think it will significantly increase my chances to accel. med programs?

And if i did get EMT certification, how would i get experience?

Being EMT certified without any experience as an EMT doesn’t really have any value, and you need to be 18 for the most part, so I doubt it will help.

^not in my program you dont. They said 17 was acceptable for EMT certification. And i turn 18 in a month anyways.

How do you get EMT experience?

I think Sean means by actually working or volunteering as an EMT. I wouldn’t think having the certification alone is really going to help you that much, but if you put it to use, that may be a perk.

Many colleges have a volunteer EMS, so you may want to look into volunteering for that once you decide where you’re going to school. Alternatively, some fire departments/rescue squads are volunteer based and may accept volunteers; depends where you live though.

So it wouldn’t be worth getting certified (which costs about $680)? I mean ill have experience but it might be too late to put in college apps. Plus im interested in EMT; not just about college apps.

My bad, I didn’t read that you were looking at BS/MD combined programs…I’m not sure it would really help you much just to put the certification on your app, unless you could spin it as “I just got certified and am currently volunteering as an EMT before I head off to school.”

Bump! any other opinions? knowledge of the situation?
