Hi guys!

I was recently accepted to UCLA and I am excited. UCLA is a top choice, but I'm still waiting for other decisions, lol.

I just had a few questions: I would have searched, but my computer is incredibly slow atm lol.

How is the general population at UCLA? Are people pretty nice and accepting and stuff?

Housing (I read the thread..so I guess I'm good lol)

Any biology/life sciences majors in the house? Do you guys have any tips, etc.?

How big are dorm rooms usually at UCLA? Also, I heard the campus food is pretty good too--what kind of food do they have?

I guess I will think of some more later..can't think atm haha. but thanks guys!

people will be people, you’ll find a wide gamut of personalities here. good thing is you will find your niche with people that you love hanging around with - high student population does count for something.

yay you read the sticky!

well, what’s your projected career path?

big is relative - a double is pretty comfortable living, a triple is not bad at all (tho one of you will have less closet space relative to others. i would put more importance on how well you interact with your roommates rather than room size. food is great - check out dining.ucla.edu for the menus and see for yourself. self-serve mongolian bbq at hedrick, italian at covel, cafe 1919…

1)
The students here are amazing. Most people are accepting and eager during the first few weeks. After the first few weeks, it’ll slow down a bit, but I usually meet new people even then.

3)
Although I’m not a life science major, I have a lot of friends who are. Make some friends to study with (this goes out to everyone actually). It’s not fun studying alone. Also brush up on your chemistry.

4)
Rooms are okay. Food is good. :)

You’ll get negative responses from the premeds on this site (which is about half the site). Student population is amazing; Most people are nice and friendly.

Housing’s good.

^what chris said

^what jinobi said

I’m a first year pre-med physical science majors, but most of the pre-meds here are life science majors. Like the others said, you probably will hear negative comments from pre-meds around here, but that’s because we have to vent our frustration somewhere. It’s not as bad as it sounds like. But do find study buddies and do brush up on your chemistry: you’ll be taking more chemistry than biology classes.

In general they are nice. Nicer than my H.S. You will meet bad ppl everywhere though.

Do room in a res hall, if you get stuck on a floor of bad ppl or have bad roomates, SWITCH ASAP.

3.Yes, pick up an AP CHEM review book and READ IT over the summer. Try to avoid lavelle if possible, ie dont take chem fall quarter.

Food is good, better than a lot of places, but still not that great.

Yeah, I’m thinking about med school or being a medical researcher in a biological lab. Like doctor/researcher, except I’m just doing research, lol.

Well, yes, I do expect to meet douch3s everywhere lol, but yeah, I just want people to be nice and friendly. Obviously, I will be too–i’m open and stuff. I just don’t like high school, lol, because it is based on superficial crap and immaturity, etc. Don’t get me wrong, I have friends, but this is what i dislike about hs and i hope that my next 4 years wherever it will be won’t be like it.

What about dorming in a suite or triple or w/e? Is that good too?

Okay, I plan to study chem too this summer. Didn’t take ap chem (only ap bio), and I don’t remember anything from honors chem lol.

Thank you so much you guys for the responses

^i dunno, don’t go too hard on reading AP chem. its nice background information to have, but you’ll be learning it anyways in 14A - and besides, if you’re going to take 14A in Winter with Scerri, its going to be a while before you draw back on stuff you learned in summer. I don’t think you have to spend your summer reading up, but to each his own.

you will have to work hard for your As in the BCPM series. enjoy UCLA your first month, but remember to study well too - hardest thing to develop here is time management. also, make sure to go to office hours - if not for LORs, then at least so you know more about the subject. tutoring from covel or AAP also helps.

lol ‘dont go too hard on AP Chem’…Lavelle EXPECTS you to know that stuff like the back of ur hand…i would do that if i were an incoming freshman, considering lavelle gets harder each year, i just finished lavelle and let me tell u that 14B final…lol…no words to describe it…insertname it be of a HUUGE disadvantage for u not to read Ap chem review book…most kids took AP CHEM in high school…

and i would not dorm in a suite i would go to a res hall for ur first year

Yes? No? Well we’re more sociable than Berkeley I hear… but not as sociable as the students at USC.

The dorm rooms are pretty small. This has to do with living in Los Angeles, so if you intend to go to a school like UCLA its really difficult to get away from it.

For campus food, we have a variety of offerings.
Cafes:
-Bruin Cafe: Largely sandwiches
-Rendezvous: Mexican and Asian food any time you want!
-Cafe 1919: “Old-fashioned” Italian food. Paninis and personal pizzas and gelato are some of the things they serve…
-De Neve Late Night: Open 9 till midnight in De Never. Serves “sausage sandwiches” (hotdogs), burgers, curly fries, buffalo chicken wings, pizza, etc.

Restaurants (mess hall/cafeteria):
-Covel: Serves Italian food 7 days a week. They have a very good desert selection. Pies and cheesecake and cookies and brownies.
-De Neve: “International” theme. It’s basically just a grab bag. It serves Asian food every once in a while.
-Rieber: Junk food like mac and cheese, hamburgers, and pizza.
-Hedrick: Has a sushi bar. Otherwise, it’s kind of blah…

Every restaurant serves hamburgers and pizza I believe.

Rieber has been closed all quarter and I think will be closed next year. De Neve has the best pizza/burgers. Covel has the worst pizza.

ThisCouldBeHeavn,

No way. The worst pizza at UCLA was the pizza you got for 3 (4?) swipes. That was just awful. MyPizza, IIRC…

I actually prefer MyPizza. It’s similar to Covel’s, but if you get there early and eat it right after it comes out of the oven it can be pretty decent. I think it may have improved recently though. I had it a couple times when my brother was a freshman and it was made in Rieber, and it was often undercooked and low on toppings. They make it in De Neve now, and it seems to be more consistent. And it (+ a 6-pack) costs 4 swipes.
