Hi I'm a current SU student, ask me anything!

Hi! I’m a current SU sophomore majoring in computer science in ECS. I’m making this thread because I love cuse and love talking about it! I’m involved in many things at SU (greek life, club sports, volunteering). Ask me anything about syracuse, comp sci, my stats, etc

what were your stats and did you apply ED?

Hi! What was the rush process like at Cuse? I got in ed and I’m interested in rushing freshmen year

I did not ED, I had 3.8/4.0 uw gpa, 2 varsity sports, was president of a club and had a few other small volunteering things I put on my app. I didn’t send my test scores (that’s all I remember)

Rushing was very fun! It takes place in spring semester, and is about 2 weeks long with 4 rounds of events (There are 13 sororities on campus). It was definitely a very time-consuming 2 weeks but very worth it, I love the house I’m in!

Can you tell us about the dorms? Split double vs open and bathrooms? Thank you for offering to give your insight!

Split double is definitely the way to go - A bunch of my friends had splits and safe to say I was very jealous - although being in an open was fine (It’s just not as nice as having a split). Most dorms have pod (private) bathrooms, I think pretty much all the freshman dorms do. They are super nice, I really enjoyed the pod bathrooms.

Hi, thanks for doing this! Do you know anyone in the engineering program? If so, what do they think of it?

Yes! I am in the engineering program (CS) and many of my friends are engineers (CS, MechE, BioE, ChemE) and we all think it’s a very good program. There’s a lot of support, especially for freshmen, and the engineering program really wants everyone to succeed. I’ve had a lot of great professors (some eh) but I think that’s pretty on par with most college experiences, not just engineering/CS. My only complaint would be the lack of women in the program - however I think that is a general thing and not SU-specific.

Hi @frozenbanana, do you have any information regarding the Syracuse EAP program with Albany Medical college, like avg number of students getting accepted each year from Syracuse ?
How difficult it is? if you can share any overall information about this program it will be useful

Thank you! that’s great to know and very reassuring.

Hi, how popular are intramural sports? My daughter really wants opportunity to play soccer.

How’s the Marshall street area? Heard a lot of places closed in last few years. Are there still nice restaurants etc walkable from campus

I’m not in an intramural personally but I have a few friends in intramurals - one plays volleyball and the other does spike ball. There are a lot of options for intramurals, as well as club sports. I believe they have the intramural soccer and club soccer but I’m not sure. All my friends’ experiences as well as mine with SU Sports has been fun

Yes! There have been a few that have closed but we recently got a Popeyes and that’s been really popular - Varsity (pizza), Five Guys, Bleu Monkey and Taste Of Asia are all good too. There’s also Westcott down the road which is walkable (I’ve walked from my dorm) that has some good places - Froyo, Rise N Shine diner, Reese’s coffee.

Do you know anyone that did the Discovery Program (study abroad) first semester freshman year? Were they still able to make friends and get involved?

I knew one person in my sorority who did it and loved it - She joined my sorority which is how she made some of her friends, however I wouldn’t really worry about not making friends freshman year. For me, I didn’t have my core friend group until sophomore year - I think for most kids it takes a few semesters to figure out what they like to do and who to hang out with because there are so many opportunities to make friends and meet people @ SU.
