Hi I was wondering if I have a chance of getting into Georgia Tech? So first of all my gpa is 3.8 expecting it to be at least 3.9 by end of year. I have not taken ANY ap or even honors classes since I go to a ridiculously small religious school, there are 11 people in my class. Im ranked 2nd. My ACT score is 30 my sat 1850 i was too stressed and missed a lot of math problems :( I plan on taking sat subject tests for physics, mathematics level 2, and chemistry. I think it was VERY stupid of me to sign up for these since I do not have any advanced classes or curriculums since my school sucks baaad at giving a good education im going to try really hard to do good on them and have been studying from 3pm to like midnight every day for two and a half weeks i still dont feel confident though. But i digress, I'm half Hispanic (Mexican) and my mother is a single parent who does not receive child support and our income is barely enough, does that help?? I feel like I'm a pretty good writer so I'm not too worried about essays. So do i stand a chance? give meyour honest opinion! I can handle the truth! Please respond as soon as possible!!!

bump

Please help ME!!

There is good news and bad news. The good news is GT uses a holistic admissions policy. Grades and SAT/ACT are only 50% of your acceptance. The rest is your essay, ECs, and LORs. This works in your favor. You also can not expect to have taken 13AP classes if they are not offered at your school. If they are offered and you don’t take advantage then you may get dinged, but you didn’t have the chance.

Having said this, GT is notoriously a technically difficult school. If you do not have a solid base coming in you will be working against the tide. Students are not known to have a lot of down time and work very hard. They do however have an excellent freshman support system.

As far as your racial heritage making a difference, according to GT’s 2009 Common Data Set it is ‘considered’, however being a first generation student is ‘not considered’.

I hope this is helpful. Best of luck. It’s a great school!!

Thank you for your help!!! One more question, I know this may sound dumb, but what are ECs and LORs? Ok thank you!

Sorry, I use super shorthand for everything. Letter of Recommendations, and Extra Curriculars. Your ECs do not have to be strictly from your school, since you said your school is very small. It can be anything you have done outside out the class. Groups associated with your church or synagogue, volunteer work, sports, part time jobs, etc.
