It seems we’re all growing up, and lately there has been a bit of discussion on the Parents Board about Law School- MBA- Post Graduated Studies etc.
Would it at all be possible to start a new Subsection in the Parents Forum on Graduate schools and other Post Grad Programs. ??
I know we already have these subsections for the students- but sometimes the parents want to get info from our POV and not take over the conversation on the Students Board.
Thanks-
Marny
I agree. I’d like this. My older S just finished undergrad and will be applying to grad in a year or two. I have no idea how to help him (does wanting to help him make me a helicopter parent??) but could sure use some information.
The division between graduate students and parents is totally unwarranted. While there is nothing wrong with parents wanting to help and remain involved, the forum were parents belong and where they’ll find support already exists.
Go check it out; some of the “usual suspects” are already there!
xiggi- that may be somewhat true. But when I check out the Law School Forum, I see many HS kids and college freshmen trying to find out how to get into Harvard Law School. And there is certainly nothing wrong with that- but as parents other types of info is much more useful.
Very Happy- I really do not feel like a helicoptor parent. (Though my kids probably think otherwise). Many of our kids NEVER go to these types of boards. So if I can pass along info to her
as an example for Law School, I learned about the–“LR Bible” , Powerscore and the Ivey Guide. I think I have already given her some valuable info. that she might not know about just because she is the type of kid who never goes to these boards.
Trust me- at this stage my d is running the show, but I have been able to give her helpful info.
I second Marny’s suggestion. It will be good to have a graduate school discussion thread on the Parents Board. D has just finished her undergrad degree and is exploring grad school options. The MBA Board has topics like “How do you become filthy rich?” which is really not what she is looking for.
I think parents bring a very different perspective. I passed on the discussion on MBA degrees on the parents forum to D. She found it interesting, much more so than the topics on the students MBA forum.
I’m all for it! Let’s have a parent grad school forum. It’s amazing how fast the undergrad years go, and there is so much I would like to learn about the grad school process… (for instance, how DD can get lots of scholarships and university support since I don’t plan on being involved financially. And, what schools consider parent’s income/assets in grad school financial aid… things like that.) The grad boards here on CC tend to have high schoolers trying to figure out how to make a lot of money and maximize their chances of getting into Wharton, or Harvard Law School!
I’m with you totally. I’d like to see a grad school forum for parents also based on the things you’ve said. Actually, my son, who will be a junior next fall, has asked for my help with gathering grad school info. If that’s “helicoptering,” so be it. I choose to think of it as “assisting.”
The problem is that few of us are able to advice on graduate programs ouside of professional schools. They are usually quite program specific, and you need to know a department intimately to be helpful. If it is the usual parent anxiety stuff, Parent Cafe is probably a better venue. Otherwise, undergraduate professors are usually the best source of information.
Don’t underestimate what you can pick up from general “conversation”. Now I’ll admit, I know nothing about MCAT’s or GRE’s but I have become a bit familiar with the LSAT. I knew before my d that there was going to be a change in the “reading comprehension” portion of the LSAT which took effect 2/07 before she did.
It was probably just the kids who read LSD (law school website- not drugs) who knew about the change.
It’s not the anxiety stuff- there is just alot of info out there
For instance in the NYC area, you gotta sign up way in advance for the June LSAT. Many kids have been closed out of local test centers and have had to travel up to Connecticut to take the exam. Now that could cause anxiety!!
New forums are created in answer to demonstrated interest and number of posts. A new thread addressing Parental Concerns and Issues for Graduate Schools has been added here:
Thanks Trinity- I just did the first posting. I really think this could be useful especially for issues of financial aid, health insurance and other things that come up for our (soon to be) college graduates.
