St. Olaf College has a "Hi Mom" webcam. Are these common on other campuses? I love the thought of being able to see my D waving at me daily. [whirl whirl whirl - am I helicoptering?] Ok, once a week.

D's LAC has a webcam that overlooks the freshman quad area. I try not to ask her more than once every couple of weeks to let me know when she will be passing a good viewing point, to which she obliges, but she refuses to wave (that's lame mom.) I also enjoy being able to see the snow/weather so I can nag her if she is dressed warm enough (once again, lame!)

Cornell has webcam all over the campus. They do have one that's "Hi Mom" bench webcam. I check on it daily to see what the weather is like. I have never asked my daughter to walk by or wave. I get to see her on Skype.

My D's campus has a couple of webcams, and I enjoy it mainly to get a sense of what her day is like (weather) -- we're in Southern California, and she's in Michigan, so there's a big difference! But we don't do any "kid spotting" with it; with oldfort, we use Skype to chat. Much more satisfying.

Slightly off topic, but a cute story -

An acquaintance of mine is in eastern Europe, adopting a 9-year-old child who does not yet know much English. She (adoptive Mom) has to be there several weeks, and she has been using Skype to communicate with her older child who is in the U.S.

One day she was using her laptop to read the news on the CNN webpage, and her new son started jumping up and down, waving, and yelling "Hi Obama! Hi Obama!". Apparently, there was a picture of Obama on the screen, and he thought his new Mom was skyping with him!

Not my D's school, but it's a really fun idea!!!!

UW Seattle used to have a weather cam looking over the Red Square, and occasionally a curious seagull or a crow would peek into the lens. On April 1st, there was a UFO or some other funny object added to the image. No student cams though.

ChiSquare, I love it! What a great story. I with this growing family the very best. It made my day to hear about it.

I've never heard of this. Naturally, I love it. Something tells me S would not love it! But he's a pretty mellow kid and I could probably convince him to give us a shout-out once a week or so.

Currently my D's college has webcams set up to show construction on the new dorms, so no students, just construction workers. I like keeping up with the weather changes

UChicago has a webcam looking down on the Bartlett (dining hall) quad that boarders the library. the camra is mounted in the library and faces the dining hall. We have had a cell phone coordinated hand wave on several occasions. Nice blue sky today Live view - AXIS 211 Network Camera

I just searched and there is a webcam point at the tower at the U of Texas. Mostly useful for checking the weather, I guess. You wouldn't see your kid unless he was climbing up the side of the tower like King Kong on the Empire State Building. (The sky is gray and gloomy there today.)

The ones at Cornell you could actually take control of it and move it around - zoom in and zoom out. You get 60 seconds, then someone else gets it. I could see the color of some people's shoes.

Wow, I just checked my Ds school has one.

Most netbooks and a lot of laptops come with webcams so you can do videochat with them if there's a cam-equipped computer at home. Our kids have MacBook Pros as do I so we can do voice, text or video chat when we're online.

UCLA has the 'Bruincam' overlooking Royce Hall. It's kind of cool.

USC has Tommy Cam which shows Tommy Trojan. Students have used it to send messages, but that was in the dark ages before cell phones and webcams. Now it's just useful to see how beautiful the weather is.

When we visited the University of Rochester two years ago, there was a "Hi, Mom!" webcam in the student union. Kids could stand on a balcony and wave. My daughter's school, Pitt, has two webcams, but they're too high up to view anyone in particular.

I checked - UW still has the Red Square cam! And they kept the gallery of the goofy birds and April Fool silly pictures (obviously, pre-Photoshop)! Here is the link to the images:

Web Cams

An example of a bird checking out the cam:

too funny! Thanks for posting that.

There is a live web cam at Northern Michigan. I am definitely expecting the apprentice artist DD to do a mother days chalk drawing!!
