Hi there! How old is everyone?

Hi i'm 21, and going to be graduating next year, and i was thinking of furthuring my education with an MBA, i was wondering what the average age of people that get their MBA are.

i ask b/c i usually see ppl get it after theyve worked for a few years, and was just wondering how old everyone is on here and when they started looking for MBA programs.. when they were in college or afterwards .. just looking for some advice!

good to be on here

Here’s my story:

I always knew I would get my MBA one day because I had a strong interest in business despite an engineering undergrad; read a lot of books on the subject. My career was going good 5 years out of school, I was working for J&J as an engineer and had a lot of opportunities. Then, my wife got pregnant, not really by accident, but a lot sooner than we had anticipated. We looked into child care in the SF bay area and realized that it would cost the same as my wife’s salary, even after all the tuition aid we could muster.

So, we moved out of state to a lower cost of living area and I took a job with a smaller company thinking I would be able to make big changes with them. It turned out they lied and didn’t want change, but want a ‘yes man’ to stay put, do your work, and shut up. This wasn’t a good thing to say to anyone and certainly not something any self respecting engineer could live with. So I quit that job after the mandatory time requirement for their assistance in helping me move and took another position with a much nicer company and enrolled in a full time accelerated MBA program offering classes at night and on the weekends.

The horrible experience I had with that smaller company made me realize that I needed to get into a position that would allow me to impact the company in such a way that wouldn’t allow such bigotry and bullheadedness to exist in a company. I have since been laid off by the nicer company I went to and am working as a consultant while I finish up my MBA. I will be 35 when I get the degree.

Here’s my take:

Get real world experience, network with real people, and work on learning an industry before thinking about an MBA. Finding your place and you reason for getting an advance degree will reward you much more than just getting it without any real reason why. You may find that another advance degree will serve you better, or that you might not even need one at all. If you find yourself 2 years out and your career is stagnant you can try, but the best colleges doesn’t want someone to use the MBA to revitalize a career they want you to use it to boost your career.

Hello jinkking, there’s often a wide range of ages in business schools. Part of this is the fact that many people work for some time before returning to earn their MBA, but it’s also a deliberate plan by schools to mix bright students who have just earned their Bachelor’s with work-experienced professionals who can speak from experience about how well business theories really play out.

My MBA class of 49 graduates ranged from 23 to 54 years of age. I am 49 and so far as I know was the third-oldest in our graduating class, where the average age was about 28.
