First for the unhidden fees... what are the fees that are part of the COA? I think for freshmen it includes Owl Week, but what else is there?

What other fees are likely to come up? Are there lab fees? Engineering fees? Rec center fees? Do school athletic events cost for admission? Anything else that I'm not thinking of? What about the use of the health center? Do some colleges require funding for various activities? Are there "vandalism" fees that everyone has to cough up if the act is not admitted to?

Thanks.

Ok, looking at my bill, each semester I pay: req health center fees ($225), req student activities fee ($55), req rec center fee ($45), housing ($4,135), telecommunication fee ($15-no idea what this is), meal plan ($2000) and tuition ($17,450). Those amounts were from last fall. Besides those, the only other thing I can think of is books which is variable semester to semester but usually a couple hundred. No lab fees that I know of (but not a hard sciences or engineering major, so not positive), the rec center and health services are covered by required fees, no cost of admission to any sporting event (including a football game we had at Reliant one year). I think some clubs do require dues so that might be something. As for vandalism type things, I think that those kind of bills get sent to the college as a whole, and the money is taken from the college funds. I’ve never been asked to pay for something like that.

Forgot to mention parking and printing. Parking in West Lot (the far one) for on-campus students is $445 (although I think it changes based on which year you are in), and it’s more expensive for the other lots. Printing is I think $.06 a page if you use university printers.

Is there free printing in the colleges or is it private printing vs pay for it?

Is the 6 cents for black/white or color or either ? Is color printing an option online?

No at least in my college, the printing still gets charged to your account. The $.06 is for black and white and I don’t know about color printing because I’ve never needed it. Printing for posters is $3 per linear foot, but that’s the only other kind of printing that I know. Honestly I don’t need to print very often as most assignments have been submitted electronically, it’s never been more than like $3/semester.

Color printing and poster printing are both available in various places around campus, and prices vary depending on size and paper type. Basic color is $.18/pg. Poster can be up to $20. Some courses that are print-heavy pay those fees for you (ex. for senior design I overfilled a 4-inch binder with documents).
I’ve had lab fees ($20,$40) for two of my upper-level bioengineering classes and paid $70 to take a college course about wine.

I think its cheaper to send your child with a printer to use in room with a laptop. The first post covered the actual cost/fees of attendance. I dont feel nickled and dimed by Rice, if that says anything. Also the Res College environment helps fill in some of the gaps that might come up at times.

The telecommunications fee is a small($15), but somewhat annoying fee. It is supposed to pay for the ability to setup a land-line in your dorm but honestly… Who uses that anymore?

A note on printing fees: my residential college (Hanszen) has a number of printers distributed throughout its facilities that allow you to print for free, assuming you provide printer paper (sometimes you’ll find printer paper already there though). The printers are technically only open to Hanszenites though. But our college fund supports free printing for all its members, which has proven very convenient.
