I have begun the research period for applying to boarding school this year. So far I have fell in love with the Asheville School. I want to attend a school where I will be challenged academically but can still stand out. I want to attend a good college too. The boarding school I attend will also need to have good financial aid available.
Also, I will be applying as a sophomore. I don't know if that influences what school I should apply to or not.
For some quick information about me, I am very interested in psychology, science research, business, and global issues.

I want to attend a unique school that will help prepare me for the rest of my future. I want a school that will open my eyes up to the world.

I am so thankful for any information you may have on hidden gem schools that would fit me.

From what you’ve offered here, any boarding school will fit the bill. If you need recommendations, you’ll need to offer a bit more than that, such as what kind of career you are looking towards, where you want to end up, how important specific programs are to you, etc.

I would recommend the Peddie School and NMH (Northfield Mount Hermon). The Peddie School has a special science research program and NMH seems to put a lot of emphasis on global ideas. They also have special international programs. Look at Loomis Chaffee as well, though some people don’t consider it to be a hidden gem.

@pdl100 Thank you so much for your views. I know I could be happy at almost any boarding school, but it is just hard to narrow down the list of ones I want to apply to. Do you attend boarding school? If so, which one?

@awsmyyy Thank you to so much for your recommendations. I will definitely look into them further. The Peddie School science research program sounds really neat, along with the NMH programs. Do you have any personal experience at these schools? If so how are the social life dynamics?

Your welcome! I haven’t had any personal experience with Peddie and NMH, but you could search up these schools on CC to see if anyone else posted anything about them. I’m just starting the process for applying to boarding schools (applying to 10th grade for entrance in the 2015-2016 school year), so I’m a bit new to this as well!

@awsmyyy Oh that’s really cool! I’m applying for tenth grade for the 2015-2016 year too. What schools are you leaning towards applying to right now? Good luck with whever you decide to apply! Maybe we’ll end up at the same boarding school

My top two right now are Exeter (dream school) and SPS. With hidden gem schools, I’m looking at Blair and Taft. Are there any other schools your considering other than the Asheville School?

@awsmyyy Those are all amazing schools! I was really into Exeter and Andover, but I do not think they are my top schools of the moment. My top two schools currently are Blair and Deerfield. I want to go to a friendly, supportive school with good academics. Other than that I am not too picky! Have you take your SSATs yet?

I haven’t taken them for the incoming school year. Have you? I’m looking for the same thing: a school with a close community. Have you looked at St. Andrew’s School? I’m considering it right now along with Deerfield (my entire considering list is pretty long). It’s really difficult narrowing down my choices! There are always so many new schools that come up!

@awsmyyy I completely understand that! Almost every school I find I fall in love with…I guess that will make it easier though if I can get into one of them! I haven’t taken any SSAT yet. I need to start studying, but that is the part I am most nervous for for sure. And I briefly looked at St. Andrew’s school. It looks amazing. And Deerfield is definitely in my top three right now. What are you involved in? And what are your hobbies outside of school?

Since it’s summer, there aren’t really any academic clubs I’m involved in. But outside of school, I play badminton, piano, and flute. I also like to dance. What about you?

@awsmyyy Right now I am also not involved in any academic clubs since it is summer But I do science research, also play the piano, referee soccer, and write.

My daughter graduated from Asheville School with the equivalent of a four year liberal arts college degree. It is a school like no other. Both a pro and a con
I am so appreciative of its sheltering/bubble environment. Your child will be sheltered from all the nightmares of your dream teen drugs, sex etc. However, this can later lead to crazy college acting out
. .

I have to mention my current school, Saint James! It’s in rural Maryland, so there’s not a lot of bad things that happen around campus other than the occasional shoplifting from the outlets up the street. A lot of our graduates go to schools like Boston College, Boston University, Elon, NYU, etc. Our sports are required here, but even if you aren’t athletic, there are always the ‘not as talented’ options, like Dance, Martial Arts, and managers of teams. If you are very athletic, you’ll find a great place here. The classes are challenging but the teachers are always helpful. I am beyond satisfied with my boarding school experience at Saint James.

The Putney School is a hidden gem. They are a progressive school that believes in a hard work ethic and learning through experience. Its a very friendly community where the students are given lots of responsibility and respect from their teachers and peers. It is very different from most boarding schools, you should have a look!

Where I’m from Kent is every bit as prestigious as Andover. So, I’ll say it’s definitely not a Hidden Gem to me but here on CC most people would wrongly (IMHO) consider it a Gem . Same can be said for about twenty-five other schools but you can’t fight City Hall ,Wikipedia or myth… so you let it go.
