High GPA and still rejected?

I honestly think perhaps the F’s DID weigh you down even though they are not UC transferable… I had a couple of D’s/F’s in NON-UC transferable courses that I took when I was 15 and stupid but I didn’t want to take any chances and filed for Academic Renewal for them anyway (on the UC app you put ‘AR’ instead of an actual grade so no computer mishaps can happen if they calculate GPA that way.) That being said, they still shouldn’t count towards your GPA, but maybe they made a mistake?

If I were you, I would try calling in a few days when all the hubbub dies down, and if you get a student on the other end keep calling back until you get someone that can tell you why. I read about a few students that were admitted after they called and found out there was a mistake in their application.

SanFrankid good luck, hopefully you can get things straightened out.
Those who got rejected, do you mind posting your stats, I’m getting nervous now.

@ocean

no, i explicitly identified UCSB as the only school I applied to (not in a desperate way. essays were solid)

@postsecret

ARE YOU SERIOUS? I made a thread here and they said they didn’t care as long as they were not UC-transferable. I replaced one of the F’s with a passing grade anyways. I had two other non-transferable courses, one C and another B. I wonder if that accidentally got tallied in? If they even included one of those classes, my GPA would be 3.6. If they factored in the F, that’s 2.9.

im not sure if i can hold on the phone and speak with a UC rep without melting down.

@San Francisco Kid. They don’t look at the non-transferable “F”. They disregard it. If they take that into account then why even bother calling it non-transferable?

Definitely call and ask!!!

Also, there are some private schools that are still accepting applications for Fall, so you should look into that! You have a great GPA don’t be discouraged!!

@LAlady do you know which private schools are still accepting applications?!

Let me know :o

@SanFranciscoKid: No, they DO NOT count, but I’m super paranoid (which is why I filed for AR anyway. =X) I just thought that maybe the computer/they made a mistake in calculating your GPA? Maybe they counted one by accident, is what I was saying. You’re a great, competitive applicant so I see no reason why you wouldn’t be accepted otherwise?

can’t disagree with ya postsecret, but if no mistake was made then obviously UCSB didn’t consider me a competitive applicant. i really wanted to go to UCSB for their program, not to party.

@lawl

i know they don’t consider non-transferable, but a poster said it might possibly look bad, or potentially be calculated into the official UC gpa. the whole admisssion’s process isn’t exactly public information anyways. there is no GPA calculator on your transcript that confirms your status.

they have 68,000 applicants. they count each GPA by hand?

Sorry to hear that man; I might just be stuck in the same boat as you… I just realized how stringent UCs are on the English req. I had been using my score of a “3” on the AP Comp to fulfill my English Comp portion of IGETC.

Looks like aside from UCLA and UCSD it doesn’t count. So i’m looking at a sea of rejection letters…

Whoa ravous you didn’t get in?? thats crazy you guys should definitely call i dont understand how they could reject you… i mean seriously c’mon UCSB

@ravous didn’t u get into UCSD? so its all good, pretty crazy still good thing i didn’t apply

UC’s also look at your coursework timeline, they want to see how many units you took per semester and if they see that in your final spring semester which is the one right now is overloaded with units so as to complete 60 units and does not match your units taken before then that will be looked down. It’s on the UC website for UCSC at least.

so if you are taking 18 units now and yet you took 9 before or something totally different, that is bad.

@lawl I’m in class right now but I can send you a list when I get home.

I was not on the first batch lol still waiting.

@SanFranciscoKid
First and foremost you need to call and figure out why you were rejected. If it was in fact because of the English or Math requirements that you will end up fulfilling by spring then appealing with a copy of your official transcript showing you passed in good standing should put it you in a decent spot for getting your decision reversed. Even if there’s another reason why you were rejected it’s always a good idea to call and ask and try for an appeal. Getting an appeal granted is usually a pretty rare occurrence, but it does happen so it’s worth a shot.

@pavin:
wait.
wait what.
all schools beside UCLA & SD do not accept AP Lit/Rhet scores of (3)??? ;; I thought as long as your CC accepts the test score to cover the Freshman English req for IGETC, it is fine, even for CAL. oo Both my honors and the CAL transfer counselor assured me of this.

My friend got accepted by UCSB last year with cal 2 and critical thinking taking in Spring, and two GE classes in summer…
just cant figure how do they evaluate
and im still waiting for the decision…hope the 2nd batch will come out soon

^^If he was taking Calc 2, chances were he already took Calculus 1 or Pre-Calc which fulfilled the math requirement. He also probably showed high chance, and low risk => getting in.

100% chance success reverse decision if you have a TAG other than that, not 100% haha XD

ferrari this isn’t funny at all.

lol sorry about that, but I didn’t see you mention about your stat, prereq, major, igetc. If you meet all those requirements,and they still reject you then something is wrong here. GPA is not the only factor they will look at it, there are many of them. Did you write your ps? lol
