High GPA, Ok SAT, What Schools?

Most folks SAT scores go up at least 100 points just from spring to fall with just basic review. You should score higher just from familiarity with the test and your current score is good for many schools as is. Good luck!

ACTs are big up north. u should retake that as well as SAT

I'm from Fairfield County as well

yup I am definitely going to retake the SATs and ACTs in the fall...I feel that I can definitely improve on the ACTs and hopefully on the SATs....what killed me on the ACTs was the science section, which I am going to practice...thanks for your help

littleathiest...Penn State University Park is better than American, Syracuse, Northeastern, Suny Binghampton, UMD, GWU, Howard, Boston University, Ursinus College, Similar stats with Villanova. I am only going by the rankings on usnews. Your personal opinion has jaded your advice. It makes me cringe to see you putting places like ursinus before penn state university park and connecticut in acceptance difficulty. Do you know anything about ursinus? It is not a match school. Those are just the ones I know off the top of my head. I don't know small colleges that well, but just refer to usnews.com to debate anything I have just listed. I have seen you do these terrible list advice groupings many different time. Being from ct and a desperate to be unique young teenage upper middle class athiest rebel is fine, but please learn what you are talking about before you start giving out information.

jec748, you are totally off. It is much easier to get into PSU than Syracuse, American, Maryland, Northeastern, SUNY, George Washington, Howard, and BU. Its stats are nowhere near Villanova's. Ursinus is actually the one school you mentioned that is about the same as PSU in terms of admissions. YOUR personal opinions have jaded YOUR advice. Please get your facts straight before you start posting.

... Furthering my beliefs that PSU is the most overrated university in the country

Just using usnews.com to debate what you have listed.

Plus, most of those other schools want essays, letters of rec, list of ECs, etc., which PSU does not ask for.

I am sorry that you feel Penn State is overrated. Our acceptance is not in the 60s. Perhaps you should check the most recent application pools because we haven't been in the 60s in 3 years. We were around 52% for this year. Our stats are near villanova. Their sat average is around a 1280, ours is around a 1230-1240. They have a gpa range of 3.6-3.9, we have a range of 3.5-3.9. You may have a few people agree with you in the CC world on your "Penn State is overrated" feeling, but overall people don't believe that at all. Syracuse is a school, though, that is overrated and easy as hell to get into. I have been there and the campus is ugly and the people are not intelligent. You are just jaded because you live in the state of new york. For some reason, new york seems to think they have this great suny school system. Binghampton, the top school of that system, is high 70s of top universities at best. It's a joke. You seem to have a personal vendetta against Penn State University Park, but that doesn't change the fact that we are #47 in the country and out rank EVERY SCHOOL that you try to rationalize as "better". The overall ranking is the most important thing. It's the quality of education that is being provided. I may blindly support Penn State, but unbiased people like usnews support my claims that Penn State is a top school. Penn State is nowhere near overrated. You are just another one of those jealous people that probably got rejected or shuffled to the waitlist.

Sorry to break it to you jec7483, but according to US News (2007 edition) PSU's average GPA is 3.5, average SAT is 1200 and the acceptance rate is 62%. The Princeton Review 2007 edition confirms this. I believe those are credible enough source, epecially since you yourself mentioned US News. You can make personal attacks on me and other schools all you want, but the facts back me up. I really don't care what the overall rankings say because those rankings really don't correlate to the actual quality of the school, whereas acceptance stats tell you exactly what you want to know-- what it takes to get into a particular school.

P.S. I went to PSU for two years before transferring out. I was unhappy with the quality of education, the career services, and the social life.

W&M is a top school that loks at the whole applicant and not just SATs. It would be a reach but you never can tell.

Please don't mistake going to a branch campus with attending Penn State University Park. The overall rankings speak for themselves. Ursinus isn't even a top 50 liberals arts colleges (#69). I am not even sure where you are getting these academic quality rankings. There is only a limited amount of information provided on princeton review and academic quality doesn't seem to be one of them. I believe they are credible, but you are taking these statistics out of context. These schools may have some strong areas, but Penn State is stronger in the overall picture than all of the schools on your list. They have larger resources and a better campus. Perhaps you need to go out and buy the most recent book because the acceptance rate was in the low 50s this year. It wasn't really a personal attack on you. I am sorry that I led you to believe that your opinion on Penn State matters. Your rants will fall on deaf ears for people that really know what they are talking about with colleges. We have enough people that love the school and know the great education it provides.

Adding to doctorb, W&M is a great school and the campus is gorgeous. Definitely check it out.

Well jec7483, I don't know where you're getting your low 50s number from, seeing as what I have listed is the most recently published version. And it was main campus.

pat - it's clear that you have an obsession with hanging out on these boards and bashing PSU (even to the point of creating different screen names to make up stories to achieve your goal). Sorry you had a bad experience there - but get over it and leave it alone. Plenty of current students and grads love it there - just like the school you love (Pitt). It's not for everyone - no school is.
BTW, lots of good students were waitlisted or deferred to a branch campus at PSU this year - especially for certain majors (like business). Although Pitt is a good school, they still had openings for freshman as of May this year. Selectivity will have an impact on the quality of the students attending...let's see what the numbers look like when the August books are published.
