High GPA vs. AP workload?

I'm basically doing everything I can do give myself as many college acceptances and as much financial aid as I can... and, Senior year registration is fast approaching. Is it more important that I take some easier courses to try to rack up my GPA (which is at about 3.36, unweighted; 3.8 weighted) or continue to challenge myself and accept that my GPA might dip a little, but mostly remain relatively unimpressive?

Another concern of mine is that I've heard that colleges look for improvement throughout the years... but, my progress seems to have a little bit of a dip in it. My freshman year started off a high GPA, but, then I went through depression sophmore year, causing my grades to fall into the 2.0's range. Last semester, I got it up to a 3.3, and intend to get it higher by the end of Junior year. Should I be concerned about my grade-nosedive from sophmore year, and, if so, is there anything I can do to make up for this?

Thanks,
