Hi!! I am preparing the enter my senior year of hs so my college search is beginning. I am just looking for some general info on HPU. I will be a Communications major, any advice on the program at HPU? Also, what about social life? Is it a welcoming environment?
Honestly I’m just looking for any info at all on the environment and experience of the school.
Thanks!!
You might be able to find some info about HPU that’s already been posted here: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/high-point-university/
In general, the best way to learn about social life/environment is to look up student reviews, visit the school, take a campus tour, talk to real students. I’d definitely recommend a visit if you really want to get a good idea of the vibe of a campus. I had a good friend look into HPU, and she said it’s definitely a very preppy, expensive school. She thought some of the people there might be of a very high economic status - take from that what you will. She ended up loving the campus though, and it did become her first choice for a school, so I’d say her first impression couldn’t have been a bad one!
Ok thanks! I’ve read a lot of reviews that described it as a “preppy” school. This may sound silly, but preppy can sometimes be described in many different ways. Can someone elaborate on how exactly HPU is “preppy”? Is it how people dress? Personality?
Thanks for the feedback!
I ask about the Reoccurring “preppy” comments because I am someone who can be very comfortable in a pair of Nike shorts or yoga pants and a tshirt. If I choice to dress like that often, rather than “dressing up” more often if I’m just going to class or hanging out, will I fit in? It sounds like the majority dress really nice a lot. Which I have nothing against, but would personally prefer to be comfortable while going from class to class.
I’ve heard that it’s a glorified country club, and that most students are VERY preppy. That said, it’s really NOT at all a good school academically. Depending on your HS stats, you may regress if you end up attending.
@esenior16 We were at an athletic event in Greensboro in 2014 and paid a visit. The campus is pretty darn impressive but academically it is not.
If you are B/B+ student looking to major in Communications and Journalism, then I recommend St. Bonaventure. The school has a national reputation in this field with multiple Pulitzer, Peabody, Murrow, Tim Russert and Jim Murray Foundation prize alumni.
We live in NC and looked at HPU with our D who is pre-med, decided against it for exactly the reasons given by LBad96 and BatesParents2019, namely the academics were not up to par. Just the other day a colleague sent me a review of HPU from the Glassdoor website. It was written by a chemistry professor who said the equipment in that department was worse than a Third World country and the administration spent all the money on fluff, didn’t care about academics. We are SO glad our D didn’t go there!
Some HPU professors have been posting about their work experience on Glassdoor. Their reviews are extremely negative, although I do understand that a few unhappy people could skew the picture. The site is glassdoor.com but it’s a little hard to use because they only show one review at a time if you aren’t a subscriber. My colleague cut and pasted them for me but they’re too long to post here, I could forward them by PM to anyone interested.
