High Point University

Is HPU worth the debt that I might have to entail to go there? My grandmother went to the university and I am essentially dead set on attending a private university… As a early college student who will be transferring in an AA degree I hope to do my coursework in 2 years. Fafsa thinks my parents can pay 20k a year, and I think they might pay about 15k a year… This means I will go about 65k in debt unless the university gives me some aid. I have a 4.6 GPA, strong extra curriculars and a 22 ACT… Is HPU worth it?

Not a bit. I like High Point. It has one of the best campuses in NC and it’s not everyday you see a non religious, conservative school. Also it’s on a country club which is pretty neat. All that said, it’s not worth the money. HPU is really bad at financial aid. If you want to stay in the triad area you should consider Guilford. It’s not quite as expensive, but they’re better with financial aid. I’ve heard really good things about it. A cheaper option would be Greensboro College but it’s kind of small and almost unheard of outside Greensboro. Alternatively you should consider UNCG and NC A&T if you can’t afford the private schools. I’ll be going to UNCG this coming week.

It’s not.

In fact no college is worth 65k in debt - and you, as a freshman, will receive a 5.5k loan, period.
BTW as a dual enrolled student you get to apply as a freshman, IE, remain eligible for the best merit scholarships… And, once admitted, you get advanced standing :).
What are our stats (hs GPA, college GPA, test scores)?
What’s your efc?
Run the NPC on Davidson, Guilford, Elon, Unc check, Unc Wilmington, unc Asheville, ncsu.

@WiliyamMSL I will likely receive the 2/3s scholarship from Greensboro because I will have an associates degree. However I am worried about the reputation and academics of GC… But I would choose GC over a public school with 18,000 people where I have absolutely no voice and no presence any day.

It is not worth that kind of debt. Seek out affordable options.

I don’t know why you would assume that every public school in NC has 18,000 students and will provide you no voice or presence. UNC Asheville, for example, has 3500 students enrolled and is a public liberal arts college–meaning a lot of individual attention for in-state tuition prices. High Point has a very nice campus and facilities but is absolutely not worth 65k in debt. No school is worth more than 20k in debt over four years, to be frank.

@extrapeppermint I would consider Asheville but their campus and facilities from pictures I’ve seen appear to be far from anything I would be willing to settle for… I think I would be willing to go in debt than settle for any public university North Carolina has to offer.

@edwards020 It’s great that you are excited about attending college and focused on making a responsible decision! Of course, like many big choices in life, cost is definitely something to consider. I would encourage you to reach out to The Office of Undergraduate Admissions at High Point University. They have Admissions Counselors (you will be assigned to one based on the state in which you attend school) and they are there to assist you, answer your questions, and guide you and your family through the college application process at HPU to eventually make the best college decision for you and your family! They are so helpful! Please find their contact information here http://www.highpoint.edu/admissions/.

@edwards020 you said your grandmother went to High Point. I’m from NC also, and it’s important to understand that this college now bears no resemblance to what it was in your grandmother’s day. Whether that’s good or bad I will leave you to decide. If you want to go to a private college, frankly speaking there are much better private colleges in NC and nearby states and most of them are going to give you much better financial aid than High Point which has a pitifully small endowment.

There are SO MANY good colleges in North Carolina… Picking HPU over UNC A, or Elon, or UNC W, or Davidson (if you are high enough to qualify) makes little sense.

HPU is a college for wealthy students with middling grades and GPAs, especially kids fleeing the Northern winters. Student body has one of the lowest % of Pell grant students in the country. But somebody told me you get to ride a golf cart on the tour and the campus has a steakhouse!
