I would consider having my kid (a probable National Merit Finalist in CA) apply to UCF, but my concern is that UCF is not known for (or strong in) International Relations or East Asian Studies programs. Is that correct? Their National Merit Scholarship is great but I was wondering how their IR and East Asian Studies programs were? Thanks in advance.
I am a big proponent of UCF, but for top students with many options I would stick with UCF’s strong areas of Computer Science (especially their Cyber Threat Team), Engineering (especially Aerospace) and Game Design (if willing to work in in the simulation field). There are probably a few others that I missed.
My D’s friend is a NMSF with great stats, ECs and a hook. She will most likely attend UCF as part of the Burnett Medical Scholars program since it will give her a clear path to UCF’s up and coming Medical school with no cost.
However, I think your concerns about the strength of UCF’s International Relations program is well founded. Can you be successful with an IR degree from UCF, especially if you can take advantage of the study abroad opportunities through the the honors program? Sure, and a full-ride is great, but there are a number of full ride NMF schools the probably have stronger programs.
@CacAsianDad Thanks for your advice. My kid luckily got into Stanford REA, so he’s going there for Humanities. Thanks again.
@CacAsianDad - did you D friend any info on BMS program?
@websensation - Congrats on getting Stanford REA
I do think Honors Colleges are really good options especially if you plan to become a doctor. My kid unfortunately cannot stand the sight of blood. Other than that, he has a temperament and personality to make a good doctor.
He could be a psychiatrist.
@Trisherella He is going to take psychology class as an elective at Stanford and see.
