High SAT but average SAT Math I Subject Teat

Daughter in Junior year. Took SAT 1 subject test (her first SAT test) in May and got 650. Took SAT In November got 2200 (800 CR, 670 M, 730 CW 10E). Took SAT this December and got 2400 (800 in each sections). She is taking AP Calc AB and will take SAT Subject test in the spring. She would like to apply to Columbia, Yale and Cornell in Senior year majoring in liberal arts. Would the Math SAT I test score hurt her chance?

Congrats to your daughter on her perfect SAT score!

Math 1 subject test is irrelevant when it comes to college admissions. Top schools usually prefer the Math 2 subject test which is much easier in my opinion than Math 1. Your daughter will do fine on that test, so nothing to worry about.

I would recommend that in addition to the Math 2 subject test, your daughter take another one, as top schools recommend 2 subject tests. (Sending Math 1 and Math 2 would be a bit redundant as well)

Thank you so much for the advice!

@rdeng2614 can you please clarify your statement re Math 1 SAT subject test. My D took it and scored 720. She also took SAt 2 Lit and scored 750. Those are her only subject tests. Are you saying that the colleges she is applying to, such as Carelton and Tufts, will not be interested in her Math 1 SAT subject test score? She scored 760 in math on SAT 1.
Sorry OP, for asking a question. In response to you, she basically did extremely well every time she took the test, so I don’t think it is going to work against her, especially when she can superscore. And she can’t do,anything about it with colleges that require all SAT scores, so don’t stress.

@Lindagaf check the schools websites. Most top schools prefer math 2 to math 1. I’m applying to tufts engineering and they specifically asked for math 2 and a science subject test. Good luck !

Neither of the colleges specify a preference for Math 1 or 2. She isn’t applying for STEM, so it should be fine I guess. Just wondering what rdeng meant exactly.

Yeah, if she isn’t applying for engineering, then she’ll probably be fine with Math 1, since that’s what I took and all ended up well. I think Math 1 maybe has a little bit of stigma attached to it, at least on these boards, but I think it’s fine if she isn’t planning on majoring in anything math-heavy.

It should be fine but colleges these days usually prefer Math 2 to Math 1 as it tests higher-level math.
If you can take the Math 2 I would recommend it, but if you can’t, your daughter should still be fine. Subject tests don’t play that much of a role in college admissions anyways.

I agree with everyone in this forum. Take math II as most students perform better on it (better curve too), and I personally believe that the resources for math II are better.

In hindsight, we should have cancelled my daughter’s Math 1 subject test. She took it when she was in her sophomore and it was her 1st test. She plans to go for Math II next May though and Lit.
