I would really appreciate if anyone could help me out with this. Ok, well I am an American citizen currently living in Turkey and I am a junior in a German-speaking school (quite complicated, I know). Since I only got a year of German preperation and also considering our school is VERY competitive, I had a hard time adjusting so my GPA is 3.2 out of 5. However in this year I have an upward trend and I will probably do something around 4-4.2 out of 5. My class rank isn't that good either: somewhere in %40 percentile. I know, so far, it sounds terrible..

Well I took the SAT's and did 2210 (Math: 800,Wri: 730, CReading: 680). I think that's pretty good. I am also planning to take the subject tests..

I am the head of the Honour Board and Ethical Values in my school, member of the MUN and also I am in the chess team. And have had work experience in my dad's office. I have a few other extra curricular activities going on also.

Now, I know it would be stupid of me to go and apply to an Ivy league or some other prestigious college. So I plan on applying to Umass Amherst, University of New Hampshire, SUNY Buffalo and Binghamton. Do you think I would be able to make into these? Or should I set my expectations lower (maybe higher :))?

PS: I have dual citizenship. Both Turkish and American, and as I said I live in Turkey. Do you know whether I will be considered an international student or not? If yes, would it have an advantage to be an international student?

If you have American citizenship than I am fairly certain you will not be considered as an Internatinal applicant. Amherst is fairly difficult to get into but you have a chance and I would recomend applying to some higher tier colleges. Explain your low GPA on your essays and in interviews and you have an excellent chance at many good schools. If you got a 2210 on the SATs than you would almost defintely get a full scholarship to any SUNY school.

If you're talking about Umass Amherst, I don't think you should have too much of a problem. That's a great SAT score and they'll recognize that. Definitely apply to the colleges you've listed but also apply to some more selective ones. Hopefully they'll understand the difficulty of your school and your situation and take that into account.

maybe try for a little higher...like penn state? actually i dont know a lot about penn state, but try for more competitive schools than these. i admit, ivies are kinda out of the question, but that doesnt mean you have to apply only to match/safety schools

considering that you do have a good reason to have a not-so-hot GPA, a nice explanation in your essay and like others have said, that good SAT score, should probably get you into your target schools there.

I'm no expert, so I'm not going to say if your're going to get into higher tier schools, but at the ones you mention, I think you have a good shot at.

You'll get into SUNY Buffalo. I live very close to it, and it is an amazing school. I also think you'll get into Binghamton. I applied there also!:)

you're in at every one of those schools, probably w/ full rides to most too. you should consider some better schools, because you have good potential.

You're more than qualified for any of those schools with that stellar SAT score, plus with reasons to back your GPA and excellent ECs.

I'd say you should even apply to some more selective schools, like Syracuse and Union if you're looking towards NY, or Wheaton and BU in MA... OR if you're looking for publics, UConn is the top public university in the New England/Northeast, I believe :)
