How bad is it to have a nice SAT score and a low(ish) GPA?

I'm a Junior, and I took the SAT twice; in October '08 I got a 2270(760 CR/800 M/710 W) and in November '08 I got a 2360(800 CR/760 M/800 W). Even though this puts me at a 2400 superscore and a 2360 single-sitting, my GPA has gone to hell and I'm afraid it's going to look to the colleges like I'm a mildly smart kid who's unwilling to apply himself in school.

I got 3 B's and a C in my freshman year, straight A's throughout my Sophomore year, and I'm looking at about three B's total in my Junior year (including second semester). Assuming P.E. isn't factored into my GPA, mine is:

9-11: 3.77 UW/4.05 W
10-11: 3.86 UW/4.29 W

And there are no special circumstances. D: My grades are just weird.

So..how bad is this going to look to Columbia ED/the top UCs? (I'm a Californian Asian Male in a very competitive high school, with the most rigorous courseload available and given solid ECs, solid teacher recommendations, and a pretty nice essay)

Also, I kind of realized this looks like a chance thread. It didn't start off as one, I assure you! D: Any responses would be great and I'll smother you with kisses, etc.

It really depends. Is your school competative and what is your class rank? Colleges look at gpa in terms of the competativeness of you school. I'd say that most likely you're in good shape. A 3.7/3.8 unweighted is very solid.

My school is very competitive, but doesn't rank. The class size is around 1000, and we usually have one or two kids per Ivy, as well as like 29 to Berkeley one year. Not to mention the people going to LA and other top 25 colleges. D:

I'd say you're probably fine then. 3.8 unweighted is excellent at a competative school. Holy crap at the 1,000 in your graduating class! My class has around ~270 haha.

nice SAT scores!!! You have a 2400 super-score! Very nice! If your school is as competitive as you say, then you are a very competitive applicant!

Colleges take the rigor of your high school into account when evaluating your GPA. A 3.8 is very solid, and with that SAT score you shouldn't have a problem of being accepted at many competitive schools (the UC's). Columbia is more difficult, but you have a really good shot there too.
