Wow, my other chances thread in the MIT forum came to this debate as well.

GR Elton, I agree with you about the GPA's, but colleges don't expect all of their applicants to go to elite private schools--only to make the most of the school they go to by taking a difficult courseload. So even though a 4.0 in relatively hard classes from a so-so public school isn't ultraimpressive, it's still a positive thing.

Of course, and without it such a candidate would stand almost no chance. However, it does not demonstrate compelling academic ability and would contribute little to an admission decision; for applicants who go to unimpressive schools, factors beside GPA (such as independent work and achievement above and beyond the norm for the school) are what's distinguishing.

i agree with GR Elton.

I hope GR Elton is right. :) Also, my rank is probably going to be close to 5% upon 7th semester grades.

Don't know if this counts for anything but I just recieved an 800 on the US SAT II exam. Yet I got a B (sophmore year)/A-(junior year) for the class. How will Princeton look at this? Granted my school's AP program is rigorous (60% 5's and 97% 3+ on all AP exams)

I think the 800 will show that you are really good at US history, but your class at school was just really hard. So it's a plus for you.

also, this might be a little off, but do you guys know how to search for college profiles on CC? Someone told me that you can search for all the stats of people who were admitted. I looked forever, and can't find it. :(

westcoastlove - On any screen at CC, whether it be the first screen that comes up or the one seen while you are reading this, if you look on the very left menu you'll see something that says STATS PROFILES, the last thing under Discussion Menu. There's a red NEW! next to it, so you shouldn't miss it. However, not everybody on CC fills out stats profiles...I know that I never did and probably many others didn't either. Also, I think the whole thing is a little bit irrelevant for schools like Princeton, because they examine so much more than your class rank and test scores. Anyway, hope that helped you find it!

ah! I see it! thanks j07!
I know that stats doesn't count for everything, but they matter a lot nevertheless.

** You have a decent shot. Your GPA won't impede with your chances, since they consider class rank more than GPA. GPA is highly subjective and it varies among schools. You are goood! **

Is this post even necessary? You will get in. Period. No doubt in my mind. You are black and have an extremely high SAT score. Being black is equivalent to adding 200 points to your SAT score and making you a 4-year varsity athlete. Guess what? A 4-year varsity athlete with an impossible SAT score of 2570 (2370+200=2570) and your ECs is guaranteed to get into any school.

You're in for sure...

I think you have a decent shot. Try to improve your class rank/percentile as much as possible.

Yeah, I think you have a very strong chance at getting in. Where/which school in NJ?

I go to a school in Northern NJ. It's pretty competitive.

if you can't get in anywhere, i definitely can't. and ur gpa is not weak.
