do top colleges really care about whether you got something like 2350 or 2400? DO they realy distinguish them alot or really not at all (as they just view the 2350 as some minor careless mistakes from that 2400)...

and my friend told me that sometimes colleges dont like the 2400 because they will try and make an excuse to get that 2400 rejected so it makes the colleges look even better as they can say "we are so good we even reject 2400s" and he said that he would rather have something like 2350 to fit into the norm better?
is that credible at all?

For the former, no. My MIT-going brother is friends with some of the top admissions officers in this country, and he says that SAT’s that are above 2200’s or 2250’s don’t matter much anymore. Anything higher than that, they assume that you’re reasonably smart and look towards other qualities, such as essays and recommendations. To put it simply, if you got a 2250+, it’s not going to be the difference between a 2350 and a 2400 that makes or breaks your chances, but essays, recommendations, GPA, EC’s, and all that.

And also “not really” to your second question. Some colleges don’t like a 2400 not because they want to look macho, but because they think that a student that gets a 2400 is probably a little too nerdy or paranoid, you know, the types of students that are either antisocial, obsessed with perfect grades to the point that all their life is ruled by grades, or play Starcraft for EC’s. They want “well-rounded” students, so if they see a student with a 2400 and good GPA but with no EC’s and poor recommendations, they are not going to like it. From what I know, they usually like sociable, outgoing, enthusiastic students who are not A-getting machines but humans that can make mistakes.
